Try changing desktop icons to Classic view. To do this, right click on desktop, select "View" & click on "Classic Icons".

i also have this problem and no its not a virus,as it happens also when i put a fresh install of win7 on.after a few days the icons change back to what they were and not the globe.not sure what causes it,its really annoying, maybe something to do with renaming the shortcuts as i do.would be nice to have a fix.there is no classic view option in win7 only icon size.i have noticed it also does it when some progs are installed.

You could try windows 7 manager and restore icons to default settings, i had weird thing happen when i booted up machine this morning some of my desktop icons for programs had changed to some of the windows 7 games icons. I don't play games but my wife does she may have done somthing last night when playing some games but any way windows 7 manager retored the to default.

Thanks, but I don't have this option in win7.

I already check online and offline. And did I fresh install.

I also did a fresh install allready. Only win7, the drivers, antivirus and flashplayer are installed.
The strange thing is it does not happen in win7 32, only in win7 64. (normally I use 64, 32 was only to test)

If you go into customization > Visual Customizer > File Type Icon, you will see Restore All button

    The problem is back.

I noticed something else, perhaps that can help?
It only happens to weblinks that have custom icons of there own.
For example google has a icon with a "G" in it, yahoo with a "Y",...

Could it be that you have a re-route set for this icon?

Check if you have this key, and if you do, make a screenshot:
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons

Stop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... Click to expand...

    No, I don't have this key. I only have HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers .

    @ellen,
Reset your iconcache.db once so that your desired icons are restored. Then set iconcache.db to read-only in properties.

Thanks, I will try it. But won't that give a problem with new icons which aren't yet in the iconcache.db?

i reset the iconcache.db with windows 7 manager a few times to get my ie desktop shortcuts back right.all is well for me again for over 1 week now no more world icons.i dont know what causes it though it seems every new vista/windows install i do it happens,i think it something to do with using ccleaner thats all i use and all i can think of or maybe because i rename the shotcuts?
