I'm guessing it'll be sometime after Windows 8 releases to stores.

Huh? It only takes one or two restarts if you update it all in one go. Unless you are installing with a non-SP1 image.

SP2 should be released by the middle of this year, MS not saying anything about SP2 because they want everyone to test Windows 8.

    Negative!

First set of updates, then reboot
2 or 3 more updates, then reboot
then the microsoft .net framework 4 appears, install, then update again, another 7 updates appear, then reboot
install office 2010, then update, another reboot

The number of restarts and the time taken depends on the method you use to install them, and whether you stick with the general availability updates or whether you opt to install the hotfixes as well.

Windows 7 SP2 general availability will most likely be early next year (finalised the end of this year). Microsoft won't be wanting to release service pack 2 before Windows 8 arrives. This is based on information that is several months old, its possible that it has been pushed back even further to capitalise on the release of Windows 8.

Apparently Microsoft already finished compiling it a while ago. It just has to be released.
