I have windows 8.1 installed on my laptop, it's not UEFI, it was a windows 7 laptop. My windows 8.1 is legitimate, no hacks and similar abuses of the system. The battery is dead, so I removed it and booted the PC, windows telling me to activate. Now putting it back in and restarting fixes it. I'm asking what I should do if I buy a replacement is this going to work or do I have to transfer license or something? is this a normal known behavior?

Just keep the Battery in space and if you buy a new one just replace the old with the new. Should work with no problems.

Try removing the battery and doing phone activation to re-normalize your activation files.

Save the data.dat, tokens.dat and the pkey for before/after just in case you mess something up.
Phone activation is called by running: SLUI 4
