    If you mean KMS or Glvk keys (Skype and etc), that's we are all wondering. I believe most members here are activated that way.

    But an official answer, just in 5 days. Best to wait.

    Yes, so long as it, ( Win 8.1) is on your computer before 29 Jul you can upgrade it to Win 10:D
    You cannot activate Win 10 with just Win 8.1 Key, 8.1 must be on your computer for Win 10 to go over it
    8.1 Core=Win 10 Home
    8.1 Pro= Win 10 Pro

    From what I understand, starting from July 29th for 1 year, if you have a validated Windows 7/8.1 install, you will be able to do an upgrade to windows 10 for free.

    Now this doesn't mean your Windows 7/8.1 keys can be used to install windows 10, it means you can upgrade via setup.exe to windows 10 without having to input a key, and it will be activated, for free.
    It however requires you to meet the windows 10 free upgrade criteria, which is...

    W7 Starter/Home Basic/Home Premium -> Windows 10 Core/Home
    W7 Pro/Ultimate -> Windows 10 Pro
    W8.1 With Bing/Home -> Windows 10 Core/Home
    W8.1 Pro -> Windows 10 Pro

    Enterprise versions not supported in the free upgrade program.

    And the setup.exe doesn't apply to 'pirate' versions of Win 8.1 or keys loaded with KSMPico/Nano.
    I have bought a brand new gamers PC with Windows 8.1 installed on it but my PC was screaming for Windows 10 when the first 'Reserve' popup came.
    But when i looked at a laptop of a mate of mine who had Windows 8.1 activated with Pico there was no reserve windows 10 popup.
    Every tweak or code won't work so i don't think people from those 'versions' can free upgrade to Windows 10 tho.:)

    Your friend must have Enterprise version, which won't apply.

    Actually it should be Jul 29(or Jul 30?), 2016, a number of OEM machines sold after Jul 29, 2015 will only have win8.1, and there will be MS people in MS stores to help the buyers to upgrade to win10. (LOL, that's not the original plan, poor MS). :D

    Windows 8.1 ProWMC also gets upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. I did that on my new laptop last night.

    *before starting the upgrade, the setup program does notify that Media Center will be removed and requires the user to click 'confirm' before proceeding.

    I just upgrade a VM from 8.1 to 10, it activated automatically but when I use some tool check the serial installed it's a generic one, key start with VK7JG and end with 3V66T. The 8.1 is a Pro with WMC activated via phone and the key is retail channel. I wonder why MS give a generic serial for the upgrade? Maybe their server still not ready?

    its there because its a free upgrade, a placeholder key (someone gonna bite me for that word). It just says to MS, hey I upgraded. The activation is done with hardware info sent to MS, the next time you install 10 and try to activate it matches the hardware info with the upgrade you originally did and it activates 10.

    Thanks for the reply!
    So I can't use the same serial to activate again when I buy a new DIY PC?

    Nah, not time-bomb, it's the MS 1-year free upgrade offer. :D
