today installed win 8.1 pro N VL x64 Nov 2013 updated on my pc cpu - AMD FX 6100 (6 cores @ 3.3 Ghz speed) mobo - ASUS M5A78ML Plus Ram - 8 Gb DDR-3 the new OS is very slow on games (including old and new games), apps, movies etc. too annoying with installing new apps becoz it asking dotnet 3.5 for 3rd party apps. same things ran at good speed on 7 my suspect was true on 8.1 , thats why i backed up 7 before installing 8.1 now happy with 7 restoration
Is it slow because it asks for .net or is it slow even after you installed .net? Also, are you asking for a solution or just sharing your experience?
leaving dotnet 3.5 needed apps aside, the apps, games, movies running slow thats what i mean to share my experience. i am not asking solution because i dont want to find 100 solutions for 100 problems presented by win 8.1. i am so happy with 7
N-version is a stripped down os without any codecs for audio or video performance intentionally made for biz only. Perhaps you should try a full 8.1 in terms of drivers, codecs et cetera or load the media package
i used murphy 20 in 1 iso for installation. can you tell me exactly which selection in the installation is perfect for good experience ?
I'm not familiar with murphy's iso but a single version out of the repository called pro (VL if KMS activation needed) will have the full packages on board. Regarding the quality of your machine it should fly with 8.1 Machine specific drivers need to be installed from manufacturer's site, no question
i always install manufacturer drivers and keep updated. i use these driver names. i may test one more installation with 8.1 pro when i get mood. thanks.
Your graphics card is a bit old. I'm not sure you'd see much improvement over 7 with an old card since it has to run most everything in compatibility mode. It's running well on my system, but I have a newer HD 7850 card with the native dx11 stuff
I have 8.1 pro x64 in my kid's computer Athlon X4 2.8ghz, 8gb DDR2 and HD4870 running every game (BAA, BAC,BAO, NFS2005and 2012, all Lego games, all Valve games) without a single issue to report, so it may be a bad installation or missing updates.
i intentionally bought low grade graphics on the board becoz i am not big game player, like old games though. price was also considered while purchased board, cpu, RAM , DVD RW drive for just 200 US $. good side of my gfx card is it can share as much RAM when needed and old games (before 2010) and HD movies of 720p and 1080p running excellent. went through google seeing the high-end gfx cards mentioned here. their prices are almost equal to new PC. if 8.1 not compatible for me, i keep on 7 for few years until this board die or i purchase newer one.
Thought it was made for countries that couldn't have certain media codecs included in software? As for the op; try disabling dynamic ticks, other power-saving options, and make sure you have proper drivers (gotten from the hardware manufacturer's site (AMD, Realtek, etc); not the entire computer OEM's site (Acer, Dell, HP, etc unless you absolutely know you have to))
It would probably be better to stay with win7 if not using a newer card. Most of the reason win8.1 is faster than win7 on a lot of systems has to do with newer hardware features. Without those hardware features, it's trying to do a lot more with a lot less capability, so hence it would seem slower.
i guess i found the problem with 8.1 now again i installed 8.1 pro VL kms activated and tested for a while. that is problem of monitor refresh rate. in the place of the device display adapter and monitor 8.1 showing "microsoft basic display device" even though i installed latest driver of my AMD 3000 HD vga driver and restarted. that device only showing the refresh rate of 65 Hz and no other modes exist in the list. this might be the reason why my games and movies ran slow. file system and software installations are at good speed. my monitor is Samsung SyncMaster 794MG ( 17 Inch CRT)
