Just verified the key provided for the us$14.99 upgrade version can be used for a fresh installation of windows 8 pro. Tried all this using virtual box and a copy of win8 pro iso downloaded from the links provided in this forum. A screenshot of the activation status:
so does this mean I can download the windows 8 retail iso or what ever iso it is, and use the serial provided from buying this. im using windows 7 with windows loader but I would prefer to be above board by using a genuine key and download
I got the promotional key too, but the upgrade program (.exe) says that my country is not yet available... Dammit Brazil! tonyt3rry: I think so.... Not sure, but i think you can do that, yes.
Just bought 2 keys and saved the iso's out of interest. The isos have different hashes - it looks like each iso downloaded has some unique information?
If I get a Upgrade key, then boot on a "regular" Windows 8 iso, install without entering the key (wipe out everything) then, once in Windows, install the upgrade key using SLMGR, will it works? Or since it is an upgrade key it won't work since it won't have been installed using a previous version of Windwos first?
Yes... But anyway, you would be prompted to enter a key after the installation (and just before the part where windows starts to ask you to set up your account profile like ur username, password). It is just that if you enter a vaild retail key (for example, the key that comes with the upgrade iso/disc), it would be activated straight away. If you enter a kms key (details are in the other threads), you would need to use the slmgr command and the address of a kms server to activate it. And you could always do a slmgr.vbs "your upgrade key" to convert a kms activated windows 8 installation to a retail key activated windows 8 installation.
So the upgrade keys will only work if using the upgrade path in the windows installer ? or will they work doing a clean install ?
im so lost so what is the best way to do it if you dont have a valid key but do want to buy the upgrade ?
Can you post the hashes? 32 or 64 bit? Did you get the "en us" version? If so could you upload or make a torrent for us? TIA
