I know that Windows 8 doesn't come with the ability to read DVD movies, by default, but I was told it was as easy as installing a multimedia player like VLC, Media Player Classic Home Cinema or PotPlayer. Well, I tried all of them and everytime I insert a DVD movies, the multimedia software hangup when trying to read the DVD. What's up with my setup?

I'll need to take a closer look at it when I come back from work... I have Windows 8 x64 but I installed MPC-HC 32 bits with the 32 bits version of Shark007 codecs and it still hangup when trying to load movie.

go and look after the latest video driver for your graphic card, best from manufacturer

Still no luck with K-Lite Mega codec pack, I'm starting to wonder what I'm doing wrong. I have an Nvidia GT330M and I installed the last driver downloaded directly from Nvidia website.

edit: it's definitely not only related to codecs, I installed the Media Center pack and I still have the same problem. I didn't have any trouble playing DVD on that computer when I had Windows 7 installed, it's strange

What if you play a movie off the hard disc? I mean that the DVD drive is about to check out. If it plays properly then, you can blame it on the drive

Try reinstalling latest directX 9.0c runtime libraries. Use dxsetup.exe /force from command line
