Don't waste your time with a crappy beta of 8.1. wait a few days for the original Consumer Preview and then enjoy the ride

consider the current W8 as an incomplete version of what Microsoft wanted to do by August last year. Now playing with W8 and June 26 getting the new stuff might disappoint you at first sight. If you are on 7 right now, keep it until you can try the Preview of 8.1. Then you can decide what to do next.
When getting the preview, run it on a virtual machine just to see whats coming along. Don't upgrade your 7 to 8.1 preview. Only do this when you can get the final RTM files, not earlier

so what your saying its not worth bothering to play with windows 8 until 8.1 is released.

Only in a VM for testing do not install it as a working OS wasting your time you would need to format and reinstall when RTM version is available that goes for every beta.

You need to do more reading, Couldn't be any easier you Install VMware or VirtualBox on to your windows 7 then run say VMware and make new virtual machine and you point it to your windows 8 iso file and install it. Windows 8 run inside VMware as a virtual machine.

If your system has x86 architecture which means 32 bit and a RAM of only 2 gig, you should only look after a 32 version of windoze 8 or 8.1
You should also have a look at your CPU if it can handle W8. If it does not have NX then you never can run W8 on both VM or directly installed on your PC

If your machine can handle W8 you also can run a 64bit with 2 gig ram but the performance is not given with such low rate. 64 bit systems perform best when using more or much more than 4 gig ram. Therefore only having 2 gig ram, a 32 version is enough because you only can address at max ~ 3.6 gig out of 4 gig if you had so much.
Just for having a first look at W8 on VM, you can install it as a 64 version within your VM on the 32 bit W7 system
