Be aware that if you install Windows 8 Pro and use "Client for NFS" is not there anymore (from turn ON / OFF features) - isnt this a regression!! agghhh!!:( I installed Pro from MSDN. so if you need this feature and buy the Retail version... surprise!

Its available on the Enterprise/VL version as well as Windows Server 2012.

If Any one knows how to install it via command line or add it somehow would be very much appreciated, thanks!!

I know this is an old post but I found a solution that works for me so I thought I'd share.

I was able to get my NFS shares mounted in Windows 8 using NekoDrive. You will also need to install the Dokan library.

You can then set up the application to auto-mount the drive.

    Thanks!
I already had to re-install using Enterprise version on my main machine but this very useful and good to know, i installed a few W8Pro and definitely this is something I'd love to implement.
I will take a look to the info noted...
    Thanks!

    1) Actually, there seems to be a client (x64 binary available) from the University of Michigan. As I'm for some weird restriction not able to post links here, here's how to get information, google "NFS Client in Windows 7 Pro" follow the second link (trevorpott).
Extract from the article there : "The University of Michigan NFS v 4.1 client. This is the exact same client for NFS 4.1 that Microsoft included in Windows 8. (Indeed, Microsoft funded its development.) It is located here. However, it does take a little bit of knowledge to install. I have found it easily scriptable for installs on a mass scale, and certainly not a problem for installs on my home machine."

    2) Another thought, I wonder if it's possible to extract the NFS client from the Enterprise version, at least this was done successfully for ReFS if one looks at other threads here - any experiences with that out there ?

Well, your personal opinion. In fact W8 Pro claims to be the successor of Win7 Pro & Ultimate, the latter contains an NFS Client.
Means, in contrast to W7 there's no non-volume licensed support for NFS on board of W8, an you can possibly imagine that there are people actually
having issues when such a feature is removed. So, a reasonable topic, or ?

I use NFS shares on my NAS for videos as the throughput is much better than SMB shares. This is the only reason I use NFS shares.

I agree, I use NFS to mainly share a drive attached to my Linux server machine to a my ESXi 5.1 server to hold/run some extra VM's and keep install ISO images (and less hassle and easier to connect to the ESXi than using ISCSI on Linux) with better throughput for such use, it works better that SMB in this case - SMB works great to share other things to others machines in the network (Windows, etc).

I think it all comes down to just personal opinion, some like chocolate, some dont..(I do!) but mileage may vary...

    Cheers!

If you know something new about this please post it.

I looked at the Michigan webpage and found it's out of my capacities to compile this stuff by myself but i will try.

I think NFS for a NAS dedicated multimedia setup (i.e. NAS+old laptop+XBMC) is far better than SMB and i don't want to "upgrade" my 8.1 pro to enterprise only to get NFS.

I can't believe what i'm writting but is easier to do this in any linux distro!

    Works for me!

Wait, the installation succeeded and I can run the commands, but then get this:

    Code:
    C:\>mount
    ERROR - Unsupported Windows version

Windows 8.1 Ultimate EN-US (got upgraded from Win8)

    Of course :worthy:

    @sammarbella,
i verified that the package contents are whole
but unfortuntely as appear to you, the package is Edition's specific (it's locked to Enterprise only - product Policies restricted)
so you cannot run it on Pro.

Yes. Hacking of Kernel-Licensing or patching the files....

    nfs-admincmdtools-ppdlic.xrm-ms
    nfs-adminmmc-ppdlic.xrm-ms
    nfs-clientcmdtools-ppdlic.xrm-ms
    nfs-clientcore-ppdlic.xrm-ms

or the checks within the executables (like always) are the problem...

the settings are generally set 0 and only with the right sku (enterprise) you can overwrite the values to 1. (also flagged as override-only).

Well, i didn't want to but i upgraded to enterprise cause i don't miss nothing (XBMC is way better than WMC).

I made a system backup and upgraded fine with all my data apps and settings.

It took a long time (2 hours) and FIVE restarts to complete.
