Would it be possible to use an old XP or Vista license which came with some old laptops of mine (pre-installed) to purchase the Windows 8 upgrade for $40 and install and use it on my main machine (and not on the laptop which I don't use anymore).
I would like to know this too. I have and old HP laptop with Vista and i would like to get the upgrade and use it on my desktop that currently runs linux.
According to public infos Microsoft gave, a License from XP onward will apply for to upgrade to Windows 8.
AFAIK the 40 buck deal only applies to retail key or COEM key; a preinstalled machine with COA key does not not apply - of course verything is pending MS official announcement. If you do get the "upgrade key", just apply it to a MSDN Pro., after activation you can install the WMC too.
Sorry couldn't confirm it atm, I believe install.win is the same, but the installer of the upgrade ISO will first look for a windows installation on the target drive.
Hey guys I've another question related to the upgrades...How M$ can discover when I've buyed my pc to let me download & install the win8 upgrade at the discounted price? I mean, we can buy today the last laptop exposed on the mall, that's just out of the box from months...so?
When I used the upgrade option on my new Vista computer back in 2010, I had to attach proof of my buy with my order number, store and buy date.
I hear alot about wmc nowadays, you do realize that its useless if you know how to setup your own media center....
