Hi all, Anybody know where I can dl the official ISO of Windows 98 and 98SE? I've seen some threads with hashes to these files but no working download links. Thanks, Mcsimmons
As a side note, the file MSDN posted for download was an ISO of the retail channel Windows 98/98SE ... but those who got CD's actually got an MSDN specific channel build. Originally they did a full CD which was like 98 retail (none bootable) then replaced with a CD containing just the win98 folders for 98 and 98SE - both MSDN channel.
I used to have Original Release of Windows 98 (1998-05-12) Retail English. But I lost dumped ISO from original CD. I regret to lost its CD.
I've got original Windows 98 Second Edition Retail full CD with Startup Setup Bootdisk yesterday as junk cd with Windows 98 FE Upgrade. File size / MD5 / SHA1 / CRC32 of 98SE is just same as MSDN one. (SHA1:f56e6fbc58c24f140b9e3a09930a0643a2bef4dc) Of course, Retail Full or Retail Full upgrade version can't boot from CD-ROM directly. (They don't include Boot Sector on CD) I'm supprised that MSDN version of 98SE is just same as Retail full version. Because MSDN version of Windows 98 FE / Windows ME is different from Retail full version. (MSBATCH.INF exist on WIN98 / WINME folder, PRECOPY2.CAB is also differemt from Retail's one.)
The MSDN website offered the RETAIL version to download. The MSDN versions of 98 refer to the versions of Windows 98 sent on physical CD's to MSDN subscribers. There is an MSDN build of PRECOPY2.CAB(and msbatch.inf) for Windows 98FE (May 1998), Windows 98FE v2 (Nov 1998) and Windows 98SE (April 1999) Windows 98FE Code: File: PRECOPY2.CAB CRC-32: 6db45aa1 MD4: 3f047a04067b5c811d6c33b65a411b9a MD5: af60e139e69cb3666dfea23684454eb6 SHA-1: 13231d39ca43ed3969b3c2a8fadd906f78c4409d Windows 98FE v2 Code: File: PRECOPY2.CAB CRC-32: eeb80e42 MD4: 37cc02ac92871371eb99047771c41ddd MD5: 9ac87549b1367f5ef67ebcfa5a861b24 SHA-1: f85455ece5c23c036817c1a3d5e0f08bd45833d8 Windows 98SE Code: File: PRECOPY2.CAB CRC-32: 76baed30 MD4: 704a9fa103f67c79e0f46bc88ba636e0 MD5: 249e8b1ee370aac1715d806030c46a00 SHA-1: 3ade9e4e09c51723f2f19f0290ca26b20be93a6b All of these are type 111 (MSDN CD) as apposed to the type 101 (Retail CD) for download on MSDN site. Please not that I have included the hash's...
Nearly most of Windows 98 FE v1 versions (Retail Full / Upgrade / OEM / MSDN) / Windows ME (Retail Full / Upgrade / OEM / MSDN / Step-Up) is now verified. Non verified version must be Windows 98 SE Retail Upgrade.
At least, no retail upgrade version of Win98 SE is verified. I don't know select version is verified or not. Only retail full version of Win98SE is verified. But I ordered Upgrade version of Win98SE on ebay. So if I receive it, I can dump it and verify.
Which upgrade? Retail Upgrade (Type 102) or OEM Upgrade (Type 116) Are you aware with Win98SE there are at least 2 different versions of the base cabs. OEM Upgrade use a different set to OEM/Retail (Talking about the BASE/NET/WIN98_XX,DRIVERXX) ....
At lease Retail Upgrade is Not verified. I don't have OEM Upgrade / OEM full version. So I can tell OEM Upgrade/OEM full is verified or not. But I've ordered Retail Ugrade, so the correct SHA1 of ISO will be shown if it is dumped correctly.
And do you know how to check the edition ID? You made the mistake before on WinME due to not checking... and what do you mean by "I don't know select version is verified or not."
I am not sure you can recompress them the same. They produce a set of precopy cab's per language - split at 1.3mb They then make a copy for each channel (retail, oem, select, internal) and add in the unique files to the precopy2.cab. All editions for a set language share the same common PRECOPY1.CAB. When you extract SETUPX.DLL your actually taking it from PRECOPY2 as it's a spanned solid archive - it knows the files that are in the whole archive (including PRECOPY2.CAB). Been a solid archive you can't easily edit/recreate it. So think of it as a split rar file - you can't just edit part2 and you can't easily recreate the split files without the exact tools in such a way to make PRECOPY1.CAB come out the same. The PRECOPY2.CAB for select is authentic/verified as it works with the english standard PRECOPY1.CAB edit: above refers to 98/98se ... WINME does not use spanned archive.
Oops, I'm very sorry. I mistake about EX_ as CAB. So please ignore my explanation for .CAB. Yes, to compress cab and match up with original default must be very difficult. I'm sorry, hehehe.
At least, I'll not try to check and verify any Windows 98 SE versions still I receive retail upgrade version. (If I receive it, I'll dump and check it.)
