Does anybody know where I can find the hash for Windows 98 SE? I need to install Win98 on an old PC. Thanks
NEED to install 98se? If your gonna go old crap just do XP, Personally Vista and 7 are fine on older machines. Do Vista if you dont want it to be cutting edge... Hell I have Windows 7 on every computer in my house except my 3 HTPC's they are running vista SP2 just because its a pain in the ass to tweak each pc for it and then upgrade my Mediaportal database on each.
Why are people here so quick always say upgrade to this, upgrade to that? If I wanted to advice on what OS to install, thats the question I wouldve asked. You dont even know the specs of the PC this will be going onto and yet you already jump the gun saying use xp instead. A friend of mine wants Win98 SE installed on his ancient laptop. He has a newer computer but he still likes using this one for whatever reason. He has one of those old Toshiba Toughbooks. A really old one, and XP runs too slow on it. If anyone know where I can find the hash for this OS id really appreciate that. Thanks guys
Totally slipped my mind... Jrrkid9, if you're not going to use a stripped down XP SP3, then I would highly recommend that you use 2000 rather than 98SE. There shouldn't be any speed differences, but 2000 is more updated and if I recall, has better network and security features.
Yep i liked 2000 the best out of pre xp os systems. Still very good and you can get quite a few apps still using it.
If you want it..I have a retail CD that I guarantee has not been mucked with.. I have a retail copy of just about every OS from M$, for myself, courtesy of my employers.. PM me for more info on procurement....If you are interested.
For some reason my friend prefers to have Windows 98 SE on this laptop. A friend of mine told him why not just put Windows 2000 on it, but he still prefers to have 98. Anyway I know this isnt his primary computer, as he does have a much newer machine running xp and he wants to try win7 on it. I guess he just keeps it around because it still works. Hes thrown this thing down the stairs and done all kinds of things to it to test if its really a "toughbook" and it still works fine for him. Anyway so im gonna get me a copy of windows 98 se and I will compare it against the hash which 911medic provided. BTW, is your windows 98 cd just an original retail one? Will it be the same as one that I download provided that the download is an iso that has not been tampered with? BTW, Thanks a lot for the hash 911medic and to everyone else for trying to help me out here. I keep getting answers to all my questions here. This forum is full of helpful people!!
okay so I got win98 se. but the hashes are totally different from the ones 911medic posted. Here are the hashes for it. the filename & size is also included.
Mine is 100% original retail and untouched from the shelf to my library. This is not a download from some warez site..We had bulk buying at the company I used to work, and these were given like candy.... This was bought in end of 1999- beginning of 2000.. The image I am offering is because it is so outdated. no harm can come from this, I have nothing to gain and, more importantly, nothing to lose.... I ripped the image to ISO and got he hash for you. No other steps of modifications..
You mean you're offereing to upload it for me? If it isn't too much trouble for you, that would be awesome.
Through trial and error I just realized that if you make an iso of a set of specifc files and then do that again a second time, the hash of the two iso's will not be the same. So even I find an iso of Windows 98 SE that is indeed the original, the hash will not match the one that 911medic got of the win98se iso. I have been looking at the files in various win98se isos that I have found and noticed that some files within these isos were modified, because their file sizes or date modified of some or all files/folders was very recent. I did find an iso which had no files added into it, as all the files/folders in it were modified on the same date (4/23/1999). I was looking at two of the isos I had which I knew were modified. Many of the files in the two isos were of the same size and date of the files in the iso that had all equivalent dates (the 4/23/1999 one). This has led me to believe that this one iso I have, which was probably an image created of the win98se disc, has all the original untampered files in it. One of the isos I found which was also tampered with, had many files in it of the date 5/5/1998 so this couldnt have been win98se because that was not released yet. This must have been win 98 first edition. Other then that none of the isos which I saw, had files near the 4/23/1999 date other then the 3 isos I was looking at. All other dates were of 2003 or later. The two 1999 isos which had modified files in them had files from dates 2003 or later as well. I hope this wasn't too confusing for anybody to read. I tried to make it as clear as I could. If somebody could read this and help me confirm that the 4/23/1999 iso I have is truly an untampered with original, that would be great.
I have a 98se ISO in my archive which has the same file dates as yours above. 4-23-1999. All the files in this ISO have the same dates. Size: 625 MB (655,591,424 bytes) Size On Disk: 625 MB (655,593,472 bytes) CRC32: D1AF0A78 MD5: 7C32B76E1B8374597CB5EF58A22AA635 SHA-1: FA040CD3F7FD472E9612B1721BC72D7B82538450 Either This is Not an original or The info is different do to this ISO being Boot-able....!!
