Omg i succeded. All i had to do is extract an .iso i DL-ed, and then make an iso using the cdimage239.exe tool. Got matching size, CRC, and SHA-1! I suppose the .iso i downloaded was an original CD which resulted with different size/hashes due to ripping software used. Anyhow, am i allowed to post here the "proper" torrent i had used for this? (P.S. I had to download some chinese DL manager to download the cdimage tool as it was the only way to get it, funny stuff, didn't know what the hell i was doing but i got the file)
Just want to put in my two cents... You want want to try Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs on this laptop instead of Windows 98 SE...
No thanx, don't know about the thread starter. I only need win98 to install it, run a tool which doesnt work on anything else (DVB-S Device firmware flasher over custom LPT cable - LOL), and then remove them and go back to XP.
Crypto, Could you please post the SHA1 hash of Windows ME before it was retired from MSDN ?? Many thanks in advance, Kind regards.
narqval, Could you please tell, what switches (if any) did you use for repacking the .iso with cdimage tool?
Easiest way is to make iso image of original cd with say UltraIso remove all the files then just add your own and burn. or you can extract the boot file save from original cd then select bootable cd/dvd image from menu and load in the saved boot file then add your files and burn or save.
Thanks for your reply. The thing is though that I'm trying to get the exact size/hashes matching the original MSDN .iso. So I doubt the way you described would get me any further.

Hi LateShift. I'm having problems attaching files and links here being a newbie, but I've made a xdelta conversion for the MSDN image that you could use to create it from a more commonly available copy of 98 SE. I used SHA1: 4C47BDF98803BDC7F5619EEE02E4D8546982A913 as the basis because it is pretty easy to find. I uploaded the delta to a file host website instead. You should be able to work out the proper site link from the bit of info below. There is also included a readme file with detailed instructions, which I know that you probably won't need LateShift, but I figured might be useful to others who stumble upon this post. Hope this helps you. megaupload.com/?d=I9ER7931
Thanks for that, worked perfectly. Now the weird thing, I ran it against the only Windows 98 SE ISO have, which has a SHA1 of: Code: File: en_win98_se_oem.iso Size: 655,591,424 bytes CRC-32: d1af0a78 MD4: 4964050ab6f766c7f1699fc62a9b9656 MD5: 7c32b76e1b8374597cb5ef58a22aa635 SHA-1: fa040cd3f7fd472e9612b1721bc72d7b82538450 Still worked, was expecting xdelta to spit the dummy, but 3 seconds later I had my new ISO Code: File: MSDN_en_win98_se.iso Size: 652,738,560 bytes CRC-32: 0aed4784 MD4: 248fb2021049c16da821cff81eae3430 MD5: e3a1a4dc79c9b4ed33b19bf4139f4b2b SHA-1: f56e6fbc58c24f140b9e3a09930a0643a2bef4dc My source is bootable, new one isn't which is what it is supposed to be. Only reason I can think of why it worked is that the source you used is like mine, just has some padding of zeros at the end. Thanks again, glad to see xdelta is catching on here on MDL. BTW, welcome to MDL, glad you decided to join actively.
Very strange! I just downloaded a win 98 SE OEM ISO with an unverified checksum using a torrent: Size: 656,203,776 bytes CRC32: 6F3C4F1D MD5: CEB2663047DB6633EDDB3ED98EB9C545 SHA-1: 3FC56CA830A8094D66F2223F176115FCDEA4F37A I used the delta file posted by dahmideleest and lo and behold! I obtained the genuine Retail ISO after a nearly 3 MB reduction in file size! Size: 652,738,560 bytes CRC32: 0AED4784 MD5: E3A1A4DC79C9B4ED33B19BF4139F4B2B SHA-1: F56E6FBC58C24F140B9E3A09930A0643A2BEF4DC I don't know how xDelta manages to compensate for such a large variation in file size. Maybe all the win 98 SE ISOs around 620 MB in size have the same source with the padding added by different ISO-creating applications.
Is there any chance of you guys identifying this win98SE iso? I got it off the usenet years ago, and it has been that long since I've used it. Size: 623 MB (653,819,904 bytes) CRC32: FFFFFFFF MD5: 5CF8DB8DA3DF41377B47A42580F3FD4D SHA-1: D827207534E1FD465D96C3B2D54823D4A7568BBA
Thanks LateShift and stream for your help. I just checked my archive and I have one that matches LateShifts copy, CRC32: D1AF0A78 MD5: 7C32B76E1B8374597CB5EF58A22AA635 SHA-1: FA040CD3F7FD472E9612B1721BC72D7B82538450
Please can anyone tell me how does the xdelta works?? I mean how does it converts any Windows 98 SE to Original MSDN ?? I had a Windows 98 SE and it converted to perfect hash?? But how did it do in just few seconds ?? If possible can I get xdelta for Windows ME too ?
Can some1 plz give me a link to download bootable working copy of windows 98.. Iam in very urgent need of it... TY
