Check your UNATTEND.txt file on the CD-ROM. You can use that key for 30 days but then you'll need to buy a different key.

Can you even buy any Server 2003 R2 keys, these days?

I don't think it'd be possible as M$ doesn't want to service such an old operating system anymore. The only few options you have are:

    - CDROM:\I386\UNATTEND.TXT (only good for 30 days)
    - Microsoft Technet article for Windows Server 2003 Keys (only good for 30 days)
    - eBay listing for Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise (x64) (only good as long as the key isn't used, there's quite a few licenses decommissioned or not used).

It would be great if Microsoft were to create a final service pack that didn't require a key for setup or a code for activation for older Windows systems, especially considering they will no longer be serviced so there is no point for any activation codes necessary past 2019.

MSFT never did it for XP and will never do it for sku's that reached EOL.

No, KMS emerged with Windows Vista/Server 2008.
