Ever since Bill Gates stepped down from CEO, Microsoft is getting worst with technology.

Probably a stop-gap fix for the malware that sets bank sites, search sites, etc. to malware controlled servers.

Does it mean blocking "SYSTEM" account's rights on this file to write or just setting "read only" attribute?

Your host files are getting reset?

My *entires* have been there since day 1 of installing Win8 and I'm using Windows Defender, even scanning the files doesn't reset it.

    Strange...

Not trying to advertise, but I use Windows Firewall Control (there are others, possibly even free ones) to do what I used to do via the Hosts file. It's just a better GUI for the built-in Windows firewall, and I'll probably find an even better solution sometime; it's certainly missing some features, but it's a start and works for my purpose for now.

And I assume they are working / they are blocking the sites you wants to, right? Then it's really strange... I'm gonna try myself, right now.

Strange indeed. I just tried in Win 8 Enterprise / Pro RTMs (on separate partitions), installed some app, updated Windows Defender, surf the web, rebooted few times but the hosts file was blocking the site I wanted to block. o_O

Yes, yes. What I meant by "strange" is that if so many are reporting that it's NOT working, how come it's working with some of us...

You might be on to something. Perhaps in the future when Windows problems arise it might be worth launching a command prompt and typing, "Hey, I'm from MDL" to see if it clears things up. :D

this OS is more intromissive than any previous OS made by m$ and this is just the beginning. When they get supported by law that they could shutdown all your files (its happening with SkyDrive), delete your account and fill a legal action against you, then you will release that installing anything after 7 is a big mistake. Or you think that you only see advertisements with your weather? :rofl6:

Paranoics, paranoics everywhere... included me :D.

That's strange, I tested my Hosts file and works fine.
I already rebooted, used IE 10, Firefox and Chrome, Synchronized some files via SkyDrive (a freaking gem), Updated the virus database of Defender, and stills blocks.

Holy f**k, I can't believe that Windows 8 is so f**king good, now, I feel sorry about my Debian Installation :p ( but still, the f**king GIMP don't work in Win8 D: )
