This app is not supposed to replace WMC as a media center, it just adds one of the features of WMC because a lot of people complained about the lack of native DVD playback on Windows 8 and one of the options Microsoft gave to users who wanted DVD playback on Windows 8 was to purchase WMC.
They are offering it on Win 7 Pro upgrades. Many OEM (and VL) but not all installs of 7 Pro included a license for DVD playback. But the documentation for the DVD player is written as if it was a replacement for WMC, not just for the DVD playback portion.
The bitch sells for $14.99 on Store, and doesn't do a thing except play DVDs. WMC sold for $12, and did everything.
Who still watches DVDs using computer? I hardly ever even switch on the standalone player. Was the DVD the shiny coaster?
I don't watch them on Computer and almost never in a standalone dvd player either. But I did have a few hundred DVDs so I ripped them and put them on a networked HD attached to the smart tv and can play them off it. Don't need the MS dvd player at all and it is extremely lame as a piece of software.
That value seems to be protected, or at least not changeable by local admins. I didn't try much to change the permissions on the value, Orbiting234's script works well enough.
