I tried installing 20348.1 Server (desktop) preview and it appied fine, but the unattend.xml file and Setupcomplete.cmd that I use for Win 10 LTSC seem to be ignored during the installation phase. When I boot, I end up with the standard setup GUI. Do I need a different answer file and does Setupcomplete.cmd apply for server?

I have no experience with server and never installed it before, so any suggestions to get the unattended install working would be appreciated. Be kind.... :D

Ok, after skipping the product key gui, I got a gui to enter a password for the built in admin. Once I did that, the the answer file and setupcomplete.cmd were used. Now I have 2 Admin accounts active instead of one. Is the built-in Admin always enabled after installing so that you have to use that first to login?

Since I'm just playing with this, is it possible to use server without a password like in W10?

I have a few other questions that I will probably have to google, but a lot of the reg hacks I have for W10 LTSC got applied. Some did no work out of the box such as autologon for the acct I created in the answer file. So what's the deal with having to login with the built-in admin before the unattended.xml and setupcomplete.cmd get processed and can this be avoided?

If anyone has some useful reg hacks to use server as a workstation so I don't need to search through all the gpo entries, please let me know.

Possible but not a good idea (just like in Win10)

Use autologon.exe, to have the password in place but log on automatically

Use secpol.msc if you want to disable the password complexity enforcement.

Is the built-in Admin enabled as default when installing server?

I know you can disable it with net user administrator /active:no, but how do you do this from the very beginning so you don't get the
built-in admin logon prompt to let the system continue with the unattended install?

The following .vbs no longer works with server to get a Shutdown GUI. Is command line or via start menu the only way now?
    Code:
    dim objShell
    set objShell = CreateObject("shell.application")
    objshell.ShutdownWindows
    set objShell = nothing

    shutdown.jpg

It's since the days of WinXP I don't use that outdated way to customize an installation.

Just start in audit mode , customize what you want, install the drivers you need, install the additional programs you need, sysprep/generalize the image shutting down.

Capture the image in a new install.WIM and if you really need a ISO (useless in 2024) replace the install.wim inside it.

No blind scripts, everything is done visually and is tested before making the WIM/ISO, less time spent in every new installation.

Yes, I may have to go that route. I just wanted to see how much of my stuff for W10 could be reused with server.

Interestingly I googled for most of the things you list in your cmd file.:) I did not know about adding a cmd
to <settings pass="specialize">. I already have this section in my xml, so can I just add the component part to it?

What is the purpose of the fltmc.exe used in the specialize.cmd?

Now that I have server up and running on my laptop, I installed all my drivers from Windows 10 which went well for the most part. The biggest problem for me now is that the network drivers I installed don't work. The Wifi adapter is missing and Ethernet shows a yellow bang in device manager. They work perfectly well in W10 and W11. Server doesn't like them for some reason. Another server quirk for me that I have no idea how to fix. Anyone?

Intel artificially blocks some drivers to sell almost identical NICs but way more expensive to corporations.

You can either edit the driver's .inf (but that requires to disable the driver signature enforcement) or more elegantly use my SKUwitch to switch temporary to pro, then switch back to server.

BTW most of the small quirks you may face on server are discussed in that thread, take your time and read it from the beginning.

What Intel NIC is it ?
For example on mine, it has an Intel i225-V, no server drivers for that, but the I225-LM driver works fine and is supported on server OS's without having to mess with INF's/driver enforcement. Manually install via device manager and search for installed drivers.
I also have bluetooth working without any issues
For Wifi, make sure the WlanSvc is enabled, otherwise the driver won't install, can't remember the error code it throws out though, something to do with invalid INF or something

SKUwitch is a more elegant way than inf editing, and learning it is useful for another huge number of scenarios, BTW even inf editing isn't that problematic...

Given you don't touch the driver itself, you need to boot with signature enforcement disabled only once.

After the driver is installed it will work, booting normally.
