I would imagine that most people building retro PCs either don't install updates since they wont be online or use the existing update rollup packs.
I resolved that issue a long time ago by integrating my Windows XP Pro SP3 32-bit install media with the updates that were available for it to May 2019.
Haha xp still rocks as virtual machine under linux because it is very lightweight. So in January this year I captured a fresh and generalized xp vm with all non-superseded updates irreversibly installed into a wim image that can be deployed using winpe (using imagex). Even MP to UP hal switch is solved. The whole thing is installed on ssd under 2 minutes lmao.
absolutely FALSE Windows XP Updates still work without problems! Windows 2000 no longer work since 2017
That's because for some unknown reason Microsoft brang the endpoints back, but for how long? That's why it's best to use this time to backup updates that haven't been archived yet in any form (and even better, reverse engineer the update client)
@Intmd They only removed updates from Microsoft Download Center Windows Update (and Catalog) links were never removed... yet
This would be a last opportunity in the month of August to download Windows updates for these systems that will be left out. If someone could dump the Windows Update site and have the updates saved, it would be of great help and also a part of the history of Windows would be being saved.
Of course, many web pages and projects that exist only do so for the English language, but in my case, I speak Spanish and my systems are in this language, there is not. What I am doing, in VirtualBox is to install each system (2000, XP, 2003 and Vista) and run Windows Update so that they are updated to the date that they are no longer supported and thus make sure that I will have the system up to date.
If you use Windows Vista, just use Server 2008's SHA-2 update. Vista will not die. However, in Vista and Server 2008, SP2 must be installed. Also, in 7 and Server 2008 R2, SP1 must be installed.
Where can I download Windows Update MiniTool? BTW, Vista will not die because Server 2008's SHA-2 updates exist.
