    Hey guys,

My neighbor brought me old laptop with Celeron and 512mb ram to reinstall Windows XP. Can you help me out a bit, what is procedure in 2020, I remember that after deadline you could use POS updates.

Are there some guides, what version should I use, where to download untouched iso.

    thanks in advance

  2. First things first, it would need more RAM, at least 2GB if possible. Also, POS updates can only be obtained from a registry hack.

I found that SP4. But I was thinking that I will found more info about what iso to use, how to activate, etc here on MDL. But all threads are abandoned.

Depending on what laptop it is, get yourself a Pentium M or Core 2 Duo off eBay for a few bucks, it's far better than any s**tleron.

Use a more up-to-date browser, IE might not cope well with newer TLS versions.

You can add registry tweaks to enable TLS 1.1 and 1.2 connections in Windows and IE 8 after installing POSReady patch and updates KB4019276, KB4459091, KB4467770, and KB4493435 (get these from Microsoft Update Catalog).

Copy the following lines, save as .reg file and import into registry to enable TLS 1.1 and 1.2 support in IE8 for Windows XP after installing the requisite updates (KB4019276, KB4459091, KB4467770, and KB4493435):

    ; This requires KB4019276, KB4459091, KB4467770, and KB4493435 (2019-04 Cumulative Update for IE 8)!
; The entries below enable TLS 1.1 and 1.2 in Internet Explorer 8 and deactivate insecure ciphers:

But note that most modern sites no longer render properly on IE8 and some encrypted connection types are not supported (a big example is Wikipedia, which IE8 cannot connect to even with the above patches applied).

You may also need to update root certificate store (download at media.kaspersky.com/utilities/CorporateUtilities/rootsupd.zip) to avoid IE certificate errors.

Finally, you may need to update the Windows Update Agent (32-bit: download.windowsupdate.com/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/7.6.7600.320/windowsupdateagent-7.6-x86.exe ; 64-bit: download.windowsupdate.com/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/7.6.7600.320/windowsupdateagent-7.6-x64.exe).

    Actually, if your laptop's CPU does not support SSE2, you will need to avoid installing the following updates (quoted from another post on this forum): KB4034775, KB4343674, KB4458000, KB4458006, KB4462987, KB4463573, KB4473077, KB4487085-v2, KB4487385, KB4489977, KB4490385, KB4493793, KB4493794, KB4493795, KB4493796, KB4493797, KB4494528, KB4495022.

Install the following updates instead of the above: KB4087398, KB4093257, KB4463361.

To avoid this trouble, you're better off getting a slightly newer laptop.

I have not been able to get windows XP to connect without 3rd party tools to install up to date certificates.

I needed to do this to activate XP and to access windows updates.

For a web browser i'd recommend mypal you can find it on github i've been using it on an old thinkpad which only has 1gb ram. Its an up to date fork of palemoon that still supports windows xp

Just an update i've found that basilisk xp mod (serpent) is quite a lot faster than mypal
