there is windows xp retail that is running on a computer, disk is absent, windows in official with official key activated. Questions:
Can it be done with a tool, similar to acer recovery tool, copy of this windows? and can it be used on any pc? (if yes, how many pc?)
I have seen 1 year ago, that there can be found on the net recovery installation disk of windows, like hp or asus or dell, can they freely then be run on many pcs? no activation needed in that case? automatic windows updates must be off or on in such case?

Windows XP Retail must be activated online or by phone, so Microsoft will detect if you use the same key to activate more than one computer.

Have you tried OEMBIOS Tool? Download OEMBIOSTEST-USB.7z, extract ONLY XPOEM.EXE to C:\, open a command prompt (start -> run -> cmd.exe) then type:
    Code:
    CD /D C:\
    (enter)
    XPOEM.EXE
    (enter)

Let me know what's the result, should say "Windows XP OEMBIOS Test v1.1/382/127" followed by more lines.

none of the 127 contained oem bios sets will preactivate this system. Press ctrl+alt+del to restart!

    @johnye_pt

I think its better for him to use this VL key along with the VL media to avoid the hassle of making multi-OEM installation media (although I always prefer to choose OEM:SLP method).

probably you do not understand. There is computer, there is windows xp pro with official key activated, I would like to put this windows on another computer with another bios, motherboard and so on. Is there any way, to make this key work on that another computer? If not on both of them, then at least on newer one of them.

If the 'official key' is OEM:SLP key, then it is possible. You need to include the SLP string of the source PC to destination PC, use corresponding OEMBIOS set along with the key.

    So let us start thoroughly:
    1. What is the type of the 'official key'??

oh, but automatic updates for years went good from official microsoft server, and as you know or not, pirated serials don`t allow that, or immediately crash system of windows.

Not true; seems that this one isn't blacklisted yet or WGA update isn't installed.

Never heard of Windows XP crashing due to illegal keys... the most it can happen is a warning about a pirated copy of Windows if WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) is installed by windows update. If you block installation of WGA, you will not be able to install WSE (Windows Security Essentials) and possibly Media Player 11.

By the way, I used Windows XP Home SP3 OEM for YEARS without any update, and never had any security problems, so you might not even need to install updates. Just install a good free anti-virus (AVG/Avast/Avira/etc), an updated browser (Chrome/Firefox) with AdBlock Plus addon and you're good to go.
