How can I change from windows 10 home to pro without buying a new key? I have windows 8 pro key and the media creation tool installed the wrong version. It installed home instwad of pro. Dont feel like reinstalling windows 10 after I just set it up. Did not realizer this until I looked at the activation. Would the insdied build 10565 let me change my product key to my windows 8.1 pro key?
Did you do the upgrade or just sling in a downloaded Win 10 ? You don't need to buy a win 10 key. Upgrade is FREE. If you did the upgrade from 8.1 pro to Win 10 did you notice if this was fully activated ? Is so I would just go for a new install. No big deal really. Are you sure it was not you who made a slight mistake and installed Home instead of Pro. One thing I like to do is get my install.wim and export the Pro Index and just work with that. Been doing that since Win 7, obviously used the Ultimate index.
Did you upgrade inside windows or did you run the burned ISO ? Did you add any keys if you installed from burned flash drive ? Go to update and then recovery, then go back to win 8.1 and post a screen shot of properties of win 8.1 version.
I really dont want to have to go through the hassle of installing windows 8 then upgrading to 10 again.
What don't you understand about reverting to win 8.1 in the recovery options. Then there is a trick so you can clean install 10 pro.
10565 will accept the win 8.1 key directly. He can just use the pro generic key to in place upgrade, and then change it trough the activation wizard.
It will expire in july 2016, he has 9 months to in place upgrade to win "10.1" or any intermediate version released in the meantime.
Insider build 10565 is time bombed, but since 10565, it is treated as genuine if activated with valid Windows 7/8/8.1/10 OEM/Retail key. Normally, if upgraded via Media Creation Tool, it would not had the wrong edition. Only he has the key, but he...
He doesn't want to even install 10 again, so now he will go insider then have to go back to a release build.
I am afraid that your Windows 8.1 key is NOT Pro. (Because you said by upgrade, not by created ISO. Even by ISO, if your Windows 8.1 is Pro, it would not have given you Home.)
yes it is I bought it. The dumb install used the embeded key in my bios and not the key that came with my pro dvd.
Yeah, that is the problem. OK. Install/Upgrade to 10565 Pro and activate with Windows 8.1 Pro OEM/Retail key. And when TH2 came, you can opt out.
