Good day, After Avast was installed on several PC's, the following happens. You get to the login screen, enter your username and login password. The system then loading your profile, but it doesn't happen, then the background comes up. You may move your mouse pointer, but no icons and no start menu Alt Ctrl Del opens task manager. You can brouwse the root and all the files on the pc, but nothing will run. Is there any body out there with a suggestion, or rather a quick fix? it seems at this stage as if the pc's will need to be reloaded! hope to hear from someone soon.
This has happened to me as well. My solution was to restore from an image backup. Uninstall Avast (the non-updated one that still ran) and install another free antivirus. AVG, Avira have both worked. I haven't looked into this further, so I don't know if it is an error on my part or if Avast has abandoned XP x64.
Try this: Boot into safe mode. Uninstall Avast. Boot normally. Use CCLeaner or similar to clean registry. Install current version of Avast. Helped a friend and I'm pretty sure that's what I did.
Most likely you have a virus which then locks the system and Avast. Try to boot from the boot disk of any, I would suggest to download the distributions from drweb.
