For no apparent reason, my wife's XP computer has started to refuse to shut down or restart after it's been in standby. It will go to the "Windows-Logging Off" screen and occasionally will make it to the "Shutting Down" screen, but then it will just stop. A soft reboot will start everything back up normally. Shut down & restart work normally if she doesn't go into standby. I am not seeing any error messages in event viewer to point me in the right direction. Any ideas?

    Check for Windows updates.

    Scan PC for virus/malware.

Iv seen this happen a few times on dad's PC, ended up just reinstalling windows which was what I had planned to do anyway.

Also try chkdsk on the drive
