Would be interesting to see what peoples consider their "must have" programs to be. The following list includes my most crucial programs
What the he77 is all that for? VLC Media Player Classic - Home Cinema K-lite COdec Pack -Quicktime Lite -Real Alternative VLC can play anything you throw at it! U just wanna install $hit don't you?
Media Player Classic - Homecinema has lots of good features about it that make attractive to use, selectable renderer tweaks and pixel shader image optimisations for example. Some extra great pixel shaders are being developed by a user currrently, they work really well. It does require a bit of setting up, but the image quality achievable can be better than VLC, not to mention better playback on TV's etc. The latest pre-release versions would be a better bet, there is a long time between official releases. There are a few different people that compile it. Edit: Just tried the latest VLC, and no matter what I did with the settings I could not come close to the quality I get with MPC - HC (tweaked settings, latest version of course) especially when output to a HDTV. Cheap LCD's (even HDTV ones) may hide image quality flaws, and video un-smoothness (especially if they suffer from motion un-smoothness themselves), but good screens there is a very noticeable difference. VLC may look pretty and play everything, but in output quality MPC-HC I think is far superior! (it plays most things anyway). AC3filter 1.63B is a good directshow codec in conjunction with MPC-HC, although you need to add it to the external filters list and set merit high in Windows 7. AC3filter has a very nice stero enhancement (surround slider, I set it around 4), and Stereo-->different sound modes. I use 3/2 + SW 5.1 channels for output to an external amplifier. SPDIF outputs as stereo, then using DTS Neo:6 in cinema mode you get far better 2ch --> 5.1 ch sound than Pro Logic II
cause you're the noob. 7zip is able to uncompress/extract certain exe's and installation files. Something which winrar is unable to do. However winrar is total pwnage in the uncompressing speed of rars. Big plus when dealing with alot of scene releases that follow strict packaging/release rules Vlc sometimes does not play certain files as they are intended to. And as i said already, everything on that list is Necessary, not optional.
do you code for Rarlabs do you? Do you know for fact that winrar has no limitations and does eveything that 7zip can do? twat. Go figure. Ps: WinRAR CANNOT uncompress any EXE. Speaking from experience. I would have no reason to bloat my PC with unnecessary s**t otherwise.

Each program performs a specific task, or tasks, you want accomplished. Without programs all you have is a rather bulky boat anchor, a paperweight if your not a boater or a grossly underutilized web surfing box.
standard pack for installation is pdf reader, antivirus, codec pack, adobe flash player, office, cd writing program, and winrar that's all what ppl need for basic work with pc
