Hmmm well it seems that Total Commander isn't without it's glitches. I've set TC to show all files BUT for some reason it isn't..... Using Windows Explorer picked it up..... Sorry for the mixup!
To see all files in TC you have to make them visible in folder options and in TC-Settings . Is working for me perfectly (TC 8.01).
Maybe it's a 64-bit thing. I also couldn't see the folder using 32-bit tools on 64-bit Windows 8. I always use TCCLE and XYplorer, but they're both 32-bit aps. So I can see the folder using the standard (64bit?) Explorer, but not with the other two. Hadn't thought about that before, because I don't use 64bit a lot yet... Time to upgrade m' tools I guess....
Confirmed: After installing 64-bit TCCLE (free CMD.EXE replacement) I can now see the "store" folder, and "data.dat" (inside it) in c:\windows\system32\spp So thanks for helping me remember to update... But can somebody explain why the 32bit version can't see the folder (in 64bit Windows)?
Hmmmmm I followed the instructions in post 1 after installing Win 8 x64 WMC and replaced the data.dat file (the new one) and then tried to activate WMC with my unique key but after about 30 seconds I got the - could not activate etc etc 0XC004C4AA Any ideas?
OK followed your advice and replaced file offline then inserted my key. Rebooted and PC status said activated.... until reboot when it went back to being "non activated" ) I guess when the PC went online again?
Tested some minutes ago. All is working here. Went online and rebooted twice for testing. System is still activated and passed installing ActiveX-Component to check genuine state successfully.
Struggling with this you´re not alone . So far all did it at least successfully. Sent out some good vibes, maybe this will help.
What is this ActiveX component you speak of and where can I download it? I thought there is no genuine check for Windows 8.
Yay..... It worked !!.... I used a data.dat key from an exact same installation I activated a few days ago etc - but isn't this all short lived? I'm sure M$ will sniff out these non standard installs soon as they must be able to if they wanted?
I activated Windows 8 using this procedure before the patch was issued (three different WMC keys, actually) and everything's working just fine. Still reported as activated. One time I even used online activation (no reboot) and it worked (if it would have been flagged as non-genuine, it would have happened right away, right?). From what I can tell, I don't think that it will get de-activated or blocked at some point because the free WMC keys are all legit keys, and I assume the SPP is only validating the latest installed product key (which is the free WMC key as listet in the activation details screen) and not the keys you used to setup Windows or WMC in the first place. Can anybody confirm this? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Tried downloading VirtualPC and had to install this in IE to get a download link. Mentioned this 3 days ago, from somebodies post, can´t remember from whom.
Atm it looks like this. Whould activation process do a scan of data.dat or tokens.dat, more systems should be flagged non-genuine, i guess.
Yes, but this is only for Windows 7 (system requirements, supported operating systems). My mistake, I used Google and searched for VirtualPC and it came up with the 2007 version, and this one doesn't ask for genuine validation. BTW what does this ActiveX control actually do - is it a standalone checker, or does it interface with the SPP?
