Activate Windows 10 with Windows 8.1 key

No it's not possible.
Do the Upgrade, after that you can do a clean install without entering any key.
You will automaticly get activated after going online for the First time because of your Hardware id

 

Other people before you were also curious. Many of them. There are lots of posts and discussions on this forum about how product keys work (or don't work) with the Windows 10 upgrade. You don't need to reinvent the wheel. Search and you shall find.

 

there will only be a generic install key in your system. there is no key for activation. you can extract the key and use it to install it but it will not activate anything. only your hardware id will activate your windows AFTER you did the upgrade from 7/8 to 10

 

Only way to get Windows 10 free is you have to install Windows 8.1 and activate using your key. Then upgrade to 10.

WoW, I just changed RAM from 24GB's to 32GB's and now it says I'm not activated, anyone have a telephone number for MS activation. I would have had backup copies but just brought Acronis 2016 for Win 10, this was right after installing RAM, I deleted old backups not knowing if they would work with new one, make new one, which I have on now, still not activated, I need to call MS if someone has a number

What else did you change besides the RAM? AFAIK the HWID allows you to change two items from the list - CPU, motherboard, RAM, HDD, graphics card.... If you need to change more, try changing them one at a time, i.e. change one, wait a few days for the new HW configuration to 'take', and then change the next item. For more help, try the gaming forums - those guys keep upgrading their hardware, so they'll have first-hand info.

 

Incorrect. Different items are weighted differently, some of them you can change several of them and not have to reactivate (e.g. RAM + graphics card), some you have to reactivate after just changing one (e.g. motherboard change causes activation to be lost).

 

I get more and more amazed at how people are trying to steal a free OS..it's free people, why the hell do you care about extracting keys to begin with? Unless of course you are running windows 3 or ME or vista in which case it's time to buy a new pc anyway.
