This is very surprising. I used KMS and the free WMC key to activate a clean install yesterday. I was under the impression that MS wanted as many people as possible to run Windows 8 so that the NSA can spy on everyone. In the next couple of days we should discover whether the door is really closed.

 

There are a lot of people who bought new computers at our local BestBuy, who are coming in wanting Win8 removed and Win7 installed.

 

So just to clarify: if, say, you re-install Win8 on machine that has successfully been activated with WMC upgrade key, because of today's MS shenanigans, you won't be able to activate it again with the same WMC upgrade key the same way as the first time? It does not matter that the key must have been "married" to the mobo? And the only way to properly activate the machine that was activated before, involves previously having made a backup of /system32/spp/store/ folder contet?

 

No fresh install was done after the failed attempt on PC1. And the error was given by slmgr /ato, the product key was accepted by slmgr /ipk. But when I checked shortly there after with the slmgr /dlv, I was reported 'licensed'.

I seriously think all our efforts will be in vain as once the genuine validation comes out just as /ato reports an error, I imagine genuine validation will.

 

Installed a fresh Win 8 Pro WMC (selfbuild ISO) then activated once online and got the usual error atm. Afterwards went offline replaced the data.dat (from store-folder) with the one provided by whazzupsuperfly, inserted one of my WMC-Keys via elevated CMD and rebooted, system was activated successfully. Activation date in this test is 03.11.2012.

 

Due to the simple fact, the loophole isn´t completely closed , this thread is slightly useless .

any news from the Neowin camp with the word 'slam' really does make unprofessional journalism looks better!

this particular slammed door can be reopened by jiggling the lock with a credit card which has a special data.dat magnetic strip.... and voila the door is opened again

 

Inserting a data.dat from an activated ProWMC and a free WMC key will do the job likewise .

 

MS has pulled down the curtain on this.

+1 to that, there always is light at the end of the tunnel,,just leave no stone unturned - n we will know very soon

 

If you really want Windows 8 Pro with WMC, you could try to find a retail key and phone it in to activate it that way. Then upgrade via WMC upgrade key. Can't say I've tried it myself since I have a valid Technet key but if you want it you could always try it

 

I received three more MCE keys today that I requested 3-4 days ago max, and activated successfully with all updates today as well.

What ISO did you use? A modified one that you created from the original Pro x64 ISO or an untouched Pro x64 ISO?

Asking cause of the confusion from other posters.
