Well, I have things to sort inside this week like the final release of the ZOTAC WinUSB Maker, some Azure stuff on my area, then I will look into the A.T.M.

I have plans to recode the main software architecture to be more stable and with safe methods to do all the things.

Inside this change, I also have plans to change the main UI concept, for a bit more easier control of the engine.

I have a team of testers able to ensure the application work, but the tests for this app is a bit more complex... We are talking about one application with many ways to work depending of the operating system, they can take months to analyse it... Anyway I can release something here while we are improving (RC 5, like that).....................

The product key asked is from your WMC Upgrade license or some Office product installed around your system....

You can see what are the product name inside the same window that is asking (Product Name: XXXX)....

The product can be an Office product (Windows 8 and Office pack is stored in the same activation system around the Windows 8)....

If you still have troubles, please post the screenshot of the application asking for the key (hiding nthe last 5 chars for your safe...

    Instructions:

    • You must have the correct SLIC (Software Licensing Description Table) for OEM activations.
    • Online and Phone activations will be instantly activated after restore.
    • Do not have major changes on the computer hardware.
    • Windows 8 and Office 2013 have the same activation system, so the backup is saved in one place called of ‘Activation Backup’, that stores all license data for Windows and Office.
    • For the Windows 8 and Office 2010 or Windows 7 with the Office 2013 or 2010, the backup is made separately called ‘Windows Activation Backup’ and ‘Office Activation Backup’ respectively.
    • Is needed to install the Windows and Office 2013 for restore their activation on a Windows 8 system.

I have a small observation about backing up/restoring licence files and activation in Windows 8.1.

In Windows 8, it was sufficient to make a backup of data.dat+tokens.dat from the store folder. To restore activation, it was enough to copy these files back to the store folder (optionally deleting the cache folder), and to reenter the product key. You could copy the files back either in safe mode, or even in normal mode if you stopped the software protection service (with "sc stop sppsvc").

As most of you have discovered by now, this procedure is no longer sufficient for Windows 8.1. Backing up and restoring the data.dat+tokens.dat files in the store\2.0 folder, and entering the product key, does not lead to an activated system. In most cases.

My observation however is that the above is only true for online activation. If you activate your system over the phone instead, you are able to backup and restore activation by just backing up and restoring the data.dat+tokens.dat files and entering the product key, just like in Windows 8.

From what I can tell, the information that is saved in data.dat during online activation is different from what is saved during phone activation. Things get even more interesting if you activate your system both online and over the phone, in various orders, so I did some experiments.

For each experiment, I performed some combination of activations, then made a backup of the data.dat+tokens.dat in the store\2.0 folders. I then restored these files to a clean system (which was not activated before), entered the product key, and checked if i'm activated. The same Windows 8.1 Pro system was used for every experiment (thanks to Virtual Machine snapshots).

Activation Order before backup is taken Activation State after restoration on clean system
    online non-genuine
    online then phone activated
online then phone then online activated
    phone activated
    phone then online activated
I noticed that the size of data.dat was different between these five cases, showing that different information is saved in each case.

What you can see from this is that if the history of the system includes phone activation at some point, then the resulting data.dat+tokens.dat can be used for restoring activation.

When you restore, was the internet up(connected) or down(disconnected) ?

Try including cache.dat too in first/online activation restore or add key first & then restore tokens.....

You have to stop the SPPSVC service, which keeps a lock on those files. Otherwise you can't access the files and so can't copy them.

So if I activated Win 8 Enterprise by phone and then saved the data.dat+tokens.dat and later in Win 8.1 Enterprise restoring these 2 files should activate it?

No, just for Pro. Won't work for Enterprise. Windows 8.1 Pro accepts the same retail product keys that Windows 8 Pro does. Windows 8.1 Enterprise doesn't accept Windows 8 Enterprise product keys.

As one of the quiet majority who simply does not post usually, since we wait patiently, I'd like to thank Josh for his hard work, and volunteer my army of Win8/Win8.1 VMs for any testing he'd like done. I am in MSDN, and I've made very good use of it. ;) Thanks for all your work again, Josh, and I'll be here if you can make use of me.

Just a quick note to all, I've re-installed Win8.1 about 6 times already and all times my backup activation has worked. I dont even stop the sppsvc :)

First I input my key : slmgr -ipk XXXX-etc

Then I copy over data.dat and tokens.dat into the 2.0 folder, I't wont let you overwrite one of the files though but if you try again it succeeds. Then restart and you are golden :)

FYI: my activation was first done by phone

I backed up my windows 8.1 pro x64 en-US with MTK 4.9.2. I had activated it with legit 8.0 pro and WMC keys, but MS Office 2013 pro plus was activated by Skype phone (I think therefore why MTK asked office key during backup). now I like to replace 8.1 pro rtm en-US with 8.1 pro rtm x64 en-GB. would be any problem with restoring the backup if I install en-GB?
