It's not because win8 defender looks like an older version of MSE that it also IS an older version. It could very well be that the engine is the same as MSE 4.
They jumped from MSE 2 to 4. So I think that the windows 8 version is something like version 3, but is developed in parallel with MSE 4 and share a lot of code.
But that's what I think, I could be wrong.

Until now, Norton 360 seems work well and Kaspaersky Pure V.2 too.

I used to use alot of different anti virus programs, but about 6 months ago I decided to try MSE from microsoft, no problems so far on Win 7, I"m sure Win 8 is better, so until it lets me down I going to just keep it, also System restore seems to work very good in Win 8, so goodbye to Acronis True image, I do use a router and have a hardware router in that, I do not see any reason to spend money on things you probably don't need.

No, guys, NEVER install Kasperky Internet Security 2013 Technology Preview. I've tried it and it's bulls**t. I can't even open my Metro style Internet Explorer! I have to uninstall it.

The built-in Windows Defender is fine to me, just like using MSE in Windows 7.

I installed Symantec Endpoint 12.1 and it has been working great.
