+1 common sense. also look into a third party firewall. Windows firewall blows. Adblock plus for firefox and chrome, easylist for IE. I don't even use Windows defender.
I reluctantly left my beautiful, activated Windows 8.1 RTM last night and went to bed. I came down this morning to find my PC already switched on and....full of suspicious looking toolbars, browser extensions e.t.c. Turns out my son got up extra early and decided to help daddy finish fixing his computer Fingers crossed the Avast Beta does the job.
I'm using ESET NOD32 Antivirus 7.0.104.0 Beta, so far no problems with WinPro 8.1 64bit. Have been using NOD32 even in preview without problems too. You can try few of them and choose your favorite. But you have to be carefull what you do on your computer anyway, not one is 100% safe.
I think you might be kidding. Which version you have installed in Windows 8.1 ???? Because Symantec officially reported that they were working on Beta for Windows 8.1.
Windows defender, malware antimaware+ KeyScrambler Premium 3.1.0.0. I have a question How Windows 8.1 update Defender via PowerShell 4.0:? Wiki.
Comodo Internet Security Premium Beta 6.3.291162.2907. Works great on 8.1 Pro RTM and replaces all default windows firewall and defender...

Only the Beta 7 is compatible now. The Final version of Eset Smart Security and NOD32 will be released in 25 days according to ESET
I think the best antivirus is ...... Yourself !! No realy most people know when they go to a suspicious site and download a virus why need a program that says "this is a virus" Ok whe are all human so we make mistakes then a virus program comes in his place I'll stick to Windows Defender it does the trick for me
The best Anti-Virus, hands-down is still "Dontclickstuff" Seriously, anti-virus programs are, at best, a false sense of security. You're better off using a program like Sandboxie on suspicious files rather than trusting that your internet security program will do it's job correctly. There are still tons of crypted malware programs that none of the major anti-virus programs detect. They even have a cute little name for Fully Un-Detectable (FUD)
