    Step by Step:
    1. Open regedit (aka registry editor; you can access it from the star menu by typing “regedit” in the search box…)
    2. Go to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\” folder and click on it
    3. On the right hand side find there are a bunch of entries. Find the key named “Wallpaper” and double click on it and put the path of the picture you want as your new wallpaper (example path is “C:\Users\Bob\Pictures\new_wallpaper.jpg”)
    4. Right-click on the “Desktop” folder in regedit that you found in step 2 and click Permissions.
    5. Click “Advanced”
    6. Go to “Owner” tab, highlight your name in the box that says ‘Change owner to’ ( There are only two choices the other is Administrator )… once your user name is highlighted click “OK”
    7. Click on “Advanced” again
    8. Uncheck the button that reads “Include inheritable permissions from the object’s parent”… click “Remove” when prompted
    9. Click “Add”
    10. Type “Everyone” and click “OK”
    11. Check Allow “Read Control” and click “OK”
    12. Click “OK” again
    13. Highlight “Everyone” and check to Allow “Read” and click “OK”
    14. Restart Computer and enjoy new Wallpaper

You probably need to select a background image that is the same resolution as your desktop resolution.

If you want a solid color just make an image filled with the color of your choice and save it as a jpg of the appropriate size.

Hello gentoo. I have followed all your instructions to change my desktop wallpaper on windows 7 starter. I got my image changed and I was very happy.

However, I could not change it again! When I tried to change the file name a second time, a message appeared saying there is an error while writting the new content of the value. Is there something I can do about to fix this?

    Not working for me...

I tried the program you suggested MadSheep, but the program told me "sorry you have to be an administrator" and did not want to work. However, I AM an admnistrator and I don't get why it doesn't work!

Hi, I have the same problem, and I tried to right click and run as administrator.

    Didn't worked.

    Regards,
    Myorek

EDIT: I think its the issue with administration account eg. BUILTIN\Administrator - i don't think its the same on every language version of Windows 7, i recompiled the softwere without that check. Will post later if that was the issue.

To change the picture position you need to do a little trick :)

    1. Open any image with paint
    2. Go to set as default backgraund and select your position
    3. the image obviously will not changed but will be positioned :)

about the administrator thing yes you can make it work better on other languages too same as the permission thing :)

i believe only this two things and the picture position left and the program is complete.

    Happy programing

    Hi again,

    The things i checked:

    1) This program really works, i was able to change wallpaper but:
    - when i did that on my administration user account all i got was black background, it didn't change wallpaper for that user,
    - after i log in on another user the wallpaper was changed,

So it seems that there may be some issues with user Profile.

I deleted my old administrator account and created the new one with
the same name: wallpaper was changed.

    Regards,
    Myorek
