That it is. I dual-boot Server 2012 and Windows 8 Pro x64 on the same Q6600 CPU/G41-chipset mATX ASUS motherboard - the only real *server* stuff I'm using it for is as a virtualization server (Hyper-V). However, it's absolutely better than either Oracle VirtualBox *or* vmWare Workstation as a virtualization platform for Windows guests. The only *desktop* application software I have installed currently is Waterfox.

Because neither Windows Server or Hyper-V Server requires SLAT/EPT (unlike Hyper-V in Windows 8 clients), Hyper-V can moot both Oracle and vmWare - provided you have only Windows guest OS requirements.

Further, thanks to how I have it set up, I can upgrade the whole dual-boot setup hardware-wise without re-activation OR re-installation (as long as I stick to Intel CPUs) - motherboard changes generally don't require a reinstall (at least not since Windows Vista/Server 2003).

I use windows server 2012 because it was free and windows 8 was not before the WMC offer. I used win2012workstation.c0m/ and did it manually, and did the conversion with the automated tool, both methods work great. I have media player 12, video, audio etc. Using it as my main OS currently, only three issues so far.
    1) I can't seem to drag and drop video files into media players (wmc12,mplayer classic, VLC etc )
*I have since resolved the issue, I was trying to run my media programs as administrator. At times it seemed I had to run things in this mode to get settings to apply ( like file associations etc) but I found a vague post mentioning the program and files have to be on the same level, disabling run as admin fixed the issue*

    2) No homegroup, not as easy to share files, esp when using login with no password on workgroup, still working on sharing with win7 shared files, or accessing files from a win7 network computer.
*Still can't access my win7 shared folders, prompts for login/pass to the target computer*

    3) No AV, but trying suggestion above now "Comodo CIS and Endpoint manager", couldn't find Endpoint Manager, the IBM one?
*Comodo seems to be working, flagged all my keygens/cracks, easy fix to add exclusions and go through the list yourself and clear some things out. I like the interface so far and it seems light weight/smooth*

    4) This may be an IE10 error but I can't view slideshows in articles on ( t.msn.c0m ). The slideshow on the main page works fine, and the articles work on other browsers.

Windows Server 2012 comes without AV, but Windows 8 Client has AV?

They expect you to deploy server packages that monitor client computers as well not just the server probably. Comodo is working well so far, its not annoying, I just don't really know how well it's detection system stands up against the other free AV's ( AVG/Avast/Avira etc.)

Windows Server is a business-oriented networking OS that is designed to work within a domain.
If you have multiple computers that have Windows 7 Pro or Windows 8 Pro installed, try creating your own local domain, it can be fun!
Set your server as a Domain controller by adding Active Directory Domain Services as a server role, make your server a DNS server by adding the DNS role, and add File Services so you can create network shares, etc.

Configure basic parameters for users and computers through Active Directory.

This all may be a bit to take in at first, but search out some good YouTube videos, and you could have this up and running in an evening.

I would recommend visiting petenetlive.com for helpful Windows Server articles and videos.

Join your other computers to your domain, and map network drives on them to your file shares.
Viola! no more need for a homegroup!

I've used server 2012 Datacenter with a legit activation but after compete install including all software & tweaks.....I cannot boot into safe mode. I tried working backward uninstalling updates, tweaks, & software. To try and locate the problem. Uninstalled everything "all most." And still could not boot into safe mode. Happened 3 times so finally went back to Server 2008 R2. Any one else having issues with safe mode?

I installed 2012 and converted to workstation.
All works well except I cannot get the Microsoft games to work.

    h??p://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/33814-Microsoft-Games-for-Windows-8

It works fine on Win8 but not on 2012. They install but won't run.
I guess it's no big deal but I like to play the solitaire game from time to time.

oops, overlooked your question, but better late than never

Commodo has a Endpoint manager, they gave it away for free with a lifetime license.

You can manage up to 10 clients (need to install CIS on all of them though) with that license.
When a client is not up to date it will first force them to update, before connection can be made.

What happens if you press F8 at boot time?

Did you try START ->RUN -> type msconfig and launch the utility. In the Boot tab, check Safe boot, followed by the type of Safe Mode that you want to achieve. Hit Apply

That’s it – when you reboot your machine afterwards, it will start up in Safe Mode.
A noteworthy mention at this point is the fact that with this setting, the system will ALWAYS boot up in Safe Mode. If you want to get back to the normal operation, just launch msconfig again, and uncheck the Safe boot option. The next (and subsequent) restarts will get you back to normal Windows environment.

Was this addressed to me or to the group in general?

I uninstalled 2012 until next time I try it out. Never noticed CPU or RAM stats.

Tried f8 to boot into safe mode & safe mode with network and neither worked. So subsequently tried msconfig and manually set boot into safe mode and boom was locked out of OS. Never have seen anything like this on any OS before.

If the Q is related to CIS, than it's 16MB idle and CPU (i7) is not even noticeable.

Sidenote: Updated to v6 today and WTF , they changed the whole UI.
First thing to do is remove all predefined fw rules...

Thanks for the reply SOCRATE MMXII. Found out that the culprit that was messing Server 2012 was System Center2012 Endpoint Protection. It was messing with core registry keys. Fortunately MS came out with SCEP SP1 that is compatible with the new servers. Can't believe that a little antivirus software would corrupt an OS that bad. Anyway now we know. Thanks again SOCRATE MMXII
