I got the two blinks of the caps lock and num lock LED's and the HP logo screen, after which the machine froze with the HP logo in place.
So this is a hardware problem rather than a software one. Thanks for the tip. Any idea if there are any retail establishments, chain or standalone, that reflow circuit boards for a fee? I have no problem disassembling the machine, but am worried I might fry the board with a heat gun. In addition, the video doesn't show which chip needs to be reflowed.
