Actually in this case I agree with SamPirate in regards to a keylogger in Windows 10. And Normally I check on these kind of things before hand...
If you take win10WTP as a M2, then it's "slightly insane" to use as main OS at this early stage. But if you take it as a release preview for Win8.2(like the win8.1 preview), then it is totally normal. Also, this time it's a bit different, in previous Windows pre-releases you need to re-install when RTM, but AFAIK(take it as rumor), this time you could upgrade all the way to RTM.
The problem with proving this in court is that it requires the reversing of Microsoft property. That means anything you do is subject to violation of the EULA. How do you prove what you know is there but in such a way that is not being done in a shady fashion yourself?
Reversing for proof of intent is allowable in the court of law. It has been that way for a long time. Reversing for other intent is another matter.
Even if that were true, which is debatable; you could prove an exe file is keylogging without reversing. All you have to do is get a program that monitors the firewall traffic of the exe.
LOL Just because it monitors your usage doesn't mean there's a keylogger. They're monitoring telemetry which is exactly the same thing they've been doing for ages with beta builds of Windows. It's nothing new, it might be slightly more real time in the past, but that's about it.
using it as secondary OS on a dual boot system. that way i can play with things and if it frags i don't have to reinstall the primary OS. as far as using it as the main OS, i don't trust MS with automatic updates turned on. what happens if they screw one up. or try to force things on us we don't want or like. i kept doing it with Win8. install it for a week, didn't like it, back to win7. it was a vicious cycle trying to get to like it. finally i said **** it and stayed with win 7 which is probabbly what i'll do with win10.
Well as EFA11 said... Prove it. I'm the kinda of person who will change their views due to what is presented to me. However I don't see enough evidence to go either way on this one.
Well if there's a keylogger it would be sending that information somewhere correct? So run a monitoring firewall and have it notify you when any background process attempts to go out to the internet.
I read at multiple places that the privacy policy for the Technical Preview is different this time and Microsoft is keylogging everything you do. Maybe it was Paul Thurrott's WinSuperSite, and the Microsoft answers or something. I don't remember. But a simple Google search brings up this: winbeta.org/news/using-windows-10-technical-preview-microsoft-might-be-watching-your-every-move-help-feedback
hey sam.... what are you worried about ?? .. that Microsoft get to know that you have a carpet full of porn that is called "manual handjobs" .... ??? LOL...
“If you open a file, we may collect information about the file, the application used to open the file, and how long it takes any use [of] it for purposes such as improving performance, or [if you] enter text, we may collect typed characters, we may collect typed characters and use them for purposes such as improving autocomplete and spellcheck features,”
Still not the same thing as a keylogger. Keyloggers collect things like bank account info and username/password. This is more of a search box and url box keyposting. Again, we'd need to see which programs do what. Fearmongering helps noone.
Murphy78 I believe you need to look up the meaning of a keylogger. It doesn't matter what text is entered. The simple fact that the text is checked in the first place and stored represents a keylogger. The result is the only thing that is being discussed as we have established that the keys are being recorded. That being said I find that statement very ambiguously worded for the purpose of the EULA. This is very shakey ground as the purpose of a Technical Preview is to improve functionality and spell checking has been in Windows for a very long time.
