The prob is my case isnt the dvd or cd coz win8.1 can definitely recognize them and read them. Even when initiating the burn, the discs spinn and the whole 9. As you said in your comments, it may likely be the way win8.1 handles writing cache or conveying the data to the cd/dvd. I too have an asus MB's. Hopefully we will come across a solution soon.

same here SANDYBRIDGE MB, other thought yes just thought, could be a security issue where win 8 prevent writing to C drive-buffering-, however I switch to D drive and results remain the same

OK! After reading all 3 pages of this issue, I thought your solution will save me as well. I went to regedit, but I have no filters there, so it doesn't apply to me.
The issue I have on my Asus N550JV is exactly what you described - reading everything, burning nothing. All the softwares I have tried (from native Win8.1 to Nero 2014) run the process smoothly and say it burned successful. But when I check the disk, it is blank, same when reading it with explorer. CD or DVD blanks - makes no difference.
I was chatting with an Asus support person and the advice was to remove/uninstall the drive in device manager and restart my laptop. Did that, no luck.

I cannot believe Asus is not aware of this compatibility issue with Windows 8.1. I also run the fix-it Microsoft provides for CD writing issues.

Does anyone have any clue on what else could I try to make my brand new optical drive (6 months old but haven't used it in the last 3-4 months) burn disks again?

    Thank you in advance!

hEY dude, I feel your pain man :tea:
But rest assured , your cd drive will work again as i have burned couple dozens since the problem showed up. So What is your OS, is it an upgrade or oem? just give us more clues . FYI my software of choice is ROXIO as it has features I sometimes use regardless of its big size. Anyway, let s get you some fixing man:clap:
