Unfortunately there is no fast way of doing it due its nature. Is there any benefit for you for doing this? If you were a system admin it would make sense, but if you are only using one or two computers and not reinstalling every month, it really not worth it :) If you need to reinstall, it would just be easier and quicker to install a RTM copy of Windows and do the updating post-install. Having a SSD makes this quicker I must admit! Probably the next time you actually need to reinstall Windows is when you change over to Windows 8.1.

That is correct that is why I said hardware temps as being a possible cause for varied performance of the hard drive at least indirectly.. Cpu etc. .. I was reading one of your posts @theoven if I read correctly some of your testing was done with limited memory (512) is that correct?

The 512mb laptop is just a testsystem to find out what the absolute minimum is for OS installs. W7/ W8/ W8.1 all install fine on it (even all three at once). But that's a different subject.

The auditmode stuff is not done on that system, it would take too long (only one 5400rpm harddisc). I'm sure it could be done though...

Hi guys, this is a serious problem,i install here windows 8 pro in audity mode and install all hotfixes by the windows updates but every time to give the dism command/online/cleanup-image/startcomponentcleanup stoped in 60% and stay... I believe in not using the startcomponentcleanup anymore, does the difference in size in the image without using? thanks.:(

Atari, here the problem continues, with you as well? the test who you mentioned, apply/online/cleanup-image/startcomponentcleanup dism on an installation and without startcomponentcleanup in the other instalation, did any difference in size final? Thanks

It looks stopped but it's not. It just takes like 2 hours since it recompresses everything using the new servicing stack stuff from 2821895.

Had the trouble only once after updates last month. This time the cleanup only lasted a couple of minutes.

Using a VM for that with several snapshots is very comfort :D. Loading last snapshot and let it perform the new updates only then Sysprep/Generalize and boot from Win8PESE to capture the WIM :good3:.

Really, it took was several hours precisely 3hrs for finish here. but I think it depends on the hardware,if it were on a ssd i think would be faster, thanks everybody

without kb2821895 it's very quick. with 2821895 it has to re-compress everything, so it's really slow. It only does it once, so if you already did the long wait once, you don't have to wait again.

Murphy 78 this kb2821895 is really important/necessary? I'm thinking of hiding this kb2821895 in the windows update the next time ..

Afaik this servicing stack update introduces new storage strategy for components in winsxs-folder. Benefit is a decrease in size for the folder and due to that for the WIM (600 MB here).

Recommend a VM with snapshot ability here, as you donĀ“t need to perform all updates every time, only the current ones for the actual month :good3:.
