Question for the experts Just discovered this forum...WOW I bought a Gigabyte EX58-UD5 and to my dismay the Dasumu patch bios emulation/SLIC thingy wouldnt work. I realized this MB is not like Asus which sells to the public. Anyhow...Downloaded the F4 bios and flashed it via the Gigabyte flash utility and presto the Dasumo bios activation thingy worked. These are my questions in no particular order from this grateful newbie. 1) The f4 bios (asus SLIC) had an autoexec file, i didnt use it, just pointed the gigabyte flasher to the bios itself. is that ok? 2) if I update to the f5 bios, will my activation have to be done again? 3) the F5 bios here is Asus/HP...why both when the F4 was Asus only? 4)if the f4 flahing was perfect, can I assume the f5 flashing will go equally smooth? (also the f5 bios has a xml License thingy, is this part of the flashing? Thanks so much! jeff
Answers..in your particular order.. 1. DOS is better, booting to dos with the autoexec with flashspi 2. Only if it is a factory bios. If it is a mod bios with the same slic, no reactivation. If you use a HP or other then need another cert installed. 3. The ASUS is for VISTA (SLIC or SLP2.0) and the HP is for XP (SLP1.0 ) 4. The xml license thingy is part of activation, not flashing. I cant see how you dont know what it is if you have activated with the modded bios.. Other than the dasumo is a boot loader and has nothing to do with these modded bios..Go figure..This is a 'softmod' and will likely fail in the future.. There is no guarantee with the flash. Too many factors can ruin your flash and brick the board. It is always a risk. If you do not need the new version for added features, fixes, or cpu updates, there is no advantage, only risk.. FYI...DOn't assume anything, Bios modding and the resultant flashes are fraught with possible problems. If you cant afford to possibly lose your board, you should seek life elsewhere...At the risk of being too crass.. Good luck and our success rate is fairly good at the moment *knock on wood*..
Question for the Experts PART 2 Thanks Medic for your reply. I really am a Newbie, embarassingly so. All I know is I would build ASUS MB systems and use dasumo and voila, activation and never a worry. Was the boot loader by dasumo accomplising this? Now with a Gigabyte EX58- UD5 that wouldnt take the dasumo Bootloader activation until I applied the F4 bios that I got here. So Am I using a soft mod now? Will the activation go away eventually? I still dont understand the mechanics as to why the asus MB took dasumo without a bios mod whereas Gigabyte wont Is there a way to know for sure that this Gigayte MB and any other from Gigabyte will give me perfect activation as the Asus MB/ Dasumo boot loader provided for me? So if I switch from the f4 i downloaded here to the f5 i downloaded here will i have to reapply dasumo? Thanks again Medic jeff
You are using softmod now. It most likely will fail in the future, as updates remove or inactivate these. When, we dont know.. The difference in bios is most likely where the bios writes to memory. Some bios work with VL2, some with 3.0, some with WOW patch. Some work from revision to revision, it is a crapshoot as to manufacturer and revision working. Depends on the mechanics of the bios and memory allocations as to whether the patch will work or not. It is not a problem to run the program again, no?? You take your chances with losing activation with soft mods, you take a chance with losing your MB with bios mods. If you flash a modded bios successfully, I see no need to use the VL..Kind of defeats the purpose of modded SLIC bios..
