Vista has always eaten up up to twice as much RAM for me after launch with some basic apps running (approx. 1.5 GB vs. 900 MB). Also, it always ran slower than win7 for me too, and my PC isn't a weak one. W7 appears to have lots of bulk and useless garbage removed or slimmed down.
