    BypassESU software is still needed. What I said was to ease searching for updates on 2012r2 by using a registry key I found while playing around, instead of running a proxy (“fake”) WSUS server every time or installing the updates manually; I was able to find a permanent solution to replace a temporary solution. 8.1 still needs BypassESU and the proxy (or manual installation) since its Windows Update cannot be permanently patched to find Windows Server 2012 [R2] updates unlike on Windows 7 and earlier. However, I reported some success on my 8.1 machine by changing the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\ProductOptions\ProductType string to ServerNT and then checking for updates without closing the registry; I was able to install the latest 2025-02 Patch Tuesday update from 8.1 WU with no issues, however it didn’t work on my VM. If you have 8.1, please try it and tell us if it works. Oh and don’t forget the ArcESU key.

    I will stop using 2012 R2 on my PC in a matter of 1-2 months, as I will migrate my server environment to another PC I got, with Srv2025 (I still need to give it some upgrades before doing so).

    Is this the massgrave thing? And can this be integrated into ISOs just like ESU Suppressor?

    Yes
    No

    ESU Suppressor is required to offline-integrate ESU updates anyway

    Changing the string to ServerNT and leaving the registry open did not work on my W8.1 Even though you type a new name and the GUI displays that change, the system doesn't register it. After making the change, I refeshed the open GUI with F5 and the value changed back to the original name, so leaving it open has the same effect as closing - the change is ignored by the system.

    Maybe the proxy did something to my system at this point. Even after uninstalling it, I still get 2012r2 updates on client.

    This Tuesday, I did the March 2025 security monthly quality rollup on my 8.1 machine. Idk how I even patched it, but Windows update shows Server 2012 R2 updates for me (I don't use the proxy). NET Framework updates install flawlessly. If I manage to replicate the way I patched my install, I will report it here.

    Strangely enough, my WU still gives me 2012r2 updates. I was able to install the April 2025 Windows and .NET cumulatives completely flawlessly, with the regular procedure.

    I said I didn't have any problems, but if you're having any, yeah you need the SSU before everything else.

    May 2025 here, I installed the monthly CU and MRT thru WU on Windows 8.1 (client) just fine. Since the start of 2025, new monthly updates means new updated ISOs of NT6.x Windows for me to create and test, 8.1 included. While testing 8.1 with 2025 updates, I decided to install the proxy, and finally managed to replicate the way I "glitched" my 8.1 ASUS laptop's WU client to get Server 2012 R2 updates. Here is the procedure:

    Install the proxy (with new datastore), run a search with it (search from WSUS), then close the CMD window and search from regular WU without the proxy running, you will get Server 2012 R2 updates, then remove the proxy and change the EditionID to ServerStandard or ServerDatacenter; after this, run a scan, you will get 2012 R2 updates one more time, then after that WU is "glitched" and you can switch the EditionID back to Professional. After this is done, you will continue receiving Server 2012 R2 updates fully automatically, with no proxy or anything.

    @abbodi1406, this means that we can analyze what was done in the proxy and make a Win8.x WU ESU Patcher out of it. I don't know if this technique works on 8.0 since I don't have it neither I have Server 2012 non-R2.

    @AlfCraft07

    It's similar to the "Alternative method after initial scan" described in WSUS proxy ReadMe

    however, i don't think either will work when detection metadata change (i.e. new ESU year in November)

    Oh ok. I thought that wasn't a feature but just a bug, so thanks for the clarification. Still, it's convenient.
