Running a MANUAL update today offers today's update as an OPTIONAL update for MSE (same update as for Defender)...
I thank everyone from this forum & all of the programmers that made the last 3 years privately safer for anyone wanting to use Win7 without paying extreme ransom fees charged by M$. Thank you & go with God. This is my Win7 end-of-life update. I came here to get updated info from everyone's comments. MS provided me a Jan2023 WinDefender update that worked for me & I am manually downloading the Jan2023 monthly update as I write this. Windows Update has alerted me to both but it took 2 tries to be successful with the Defender update & after 2 fails on the monthly, I am manually downloading now for install. I have had months where I used this forum's update package when MS seemed troublesome. It is interesting news that support may be finagled for another year. Will be following with interest. Not worried about security as long as Kaspersky continues to support Win7. For me, that is the real worry as government, security & financial institutions drop Win7 support. A year ago I downloaded the free version of ZORIN 16.0. Have been playing with Linux for years & will NOT be going to Win10 or 11. I am DONE with M$. Once Win7 becomes impossible to safely use any longer I will invest in ZORIN PRO. I will be using both until that time. Still a lot of Win7 & older computers in the world. Thank everyone involved again. ;>) The downloaded monthly update for Jan2023 worked perfectly. One foot in front of the other.
winaero.com/microsoft-intends-to-extend-paid-support-for-windows-7-until-2026/ It is a projected RUMOR until MS confirms with their own announcement. FYI (not officially confirmed): "Looks like the plans have changed. Reportedly, Microsoft intends to extend paid support for Windows 7 for another three years. The July updates KB5015861 and KB5015862 include appropriate bits for licenses and ESU keys to continue paid support for the system. If so, then Windows 7 will receive paid updates for more three years, i.e. until January 2026." Searches on these 2 KBs will keep you updated until... Me? Already downloaded & updated my WIN7 for Jan2023. One month at a time then ZORIN OS: Pro... One foot in front of the other. ;>)
Hello Everyone, Thanks everyone who worked to make the update in the last 3 years and who inform from the updates. I have a question. Does the January patch not kill Internet explorer? Can it work after? Thank you in advance for the answers.
Hello balazsa21, I installed latest January 2023 Windows 7 patches Internet Explorer is still installed and I can launch it, but when I try to reach an URL it closes automatically and Edge is launched with the same URL entered before. I don't know for sure if this happened before this latest update because it's was long time that I didn't try to use IE Pyornkrachzark
IE still works fine with the January 2023 patch installed on the few websites that support it, but I don't have Edge installed.
You can try removing the BHO from the application folder. You can find that at \Program Files\Microsoft\Edge\Application\109.0.1518.49\BHO\. If you're on 64 delete that one instead (ie_to_edge_bho_64.dll).
Hello @hanzzon2, Thank you your answer. I thought it would be disabled it with this update. I calmed down.
The "danger" is not in whether it will execute (run) or not. If IE is detected sites can refuse access via that software. IE is just another piece of software. As is the various versions of Win7. Problems occur when the site you want to access starts detecting & refusing access. I use Ungoogled Chrome & Firefox as my browsers. Using one or the other has given me the ability to reach all sites I seek with Win7. For now. Even M$ catalog for updates. I am also a Windscribe VPN user which helps mask ID info collected by sites. Maybe we get 1 to 3 years more out of Win7. If not, then ZORIN OS Pro will be my choice for OS.
You could hit up the microsoft catalog every month and search for the latest PosReady 7 updates. That would be pretty manual.
must wait either next month or so to find out sometimes MS does not release new esu .NET updates each month
No surprise, since SCEP blog says that will work till October 2023. But Microsoft will extend to October 2024 for POSReady7... Let's see what will happen...
