I messed up my W7 Guest OS on Parallels 8 on an old mac after updating Wise Registry Cleaner. Everything froze up, and I ended up going back to a Backup pvm I made just before the November Rollup. The definitions update went ok, but the November Rollup failed, claiming it was not needed.

I decided that I needed the SSU from November, but WU wouldn't offer it, so I manually downloaded KB5071810 from the Catalogue and manually installed it on W7, which was successful. However, WU Update History referred to it as "Security Update for Windows (KB5071810)" when I was expecting it to read "Servicing Stack Update for Windows Server 2008 R2 for X64 based systems" as it did in April, and as I remembered my defunct version doing. When I delved into the description that stated it was a "Fix for KB5071810" rather than the actual thing. The download was 9.7MB msu file. The Microsoft help page was unhelpful returning "this page no longer exists".

WU did flag up the 2025-12 Rollover KB50715101, but it failed to install with a 80092004 error suggesting a dodgy SSU. I am now going to try a manual install.
This produced an 8024000B error message, but I closed the window, and I got another window asking me if I wanted to install the upgrade. I said yes, and this time, it seems to have worked.

Anyone capable of handling a 2-year-old child should not be fazed by all this!

My goodness, W7 is slow these days. Modern systems seem to presume we all have fibre broadband and somewhat more than 1.5/0.5 MB/s. I think dial-up was faster in its day. It took all day to order and pay for a train ticket. I have an old version of Linux Mint (19) which Parallels tools still supported. I might try a later version, once I've done a clear-out of my hard drive to make room, but keep a backup of the old pvm in case it doesn't work.

Life online was so much easier, faster, more pleasant and better throughout 20 years ago. I still have XP as a Guest OS, which has the best file manager and the best photo editor and is fast and stable and a joy to use. Such a pity I daren't use it online, although it has a more up-to-date browser than the native mac OS Snow Leopard. I use W7 when websites don't work anywhere else, but am still bedevilled by third party javascript that insist on worming their way unannounced and foul up websites. A simply text notice stating which javascripts are required to make things work would suffice, but I refuse anything to do with Doubleclick, Google Analytics, or any other targeted analyticals.

That is confusing, but normal. Installing an update manually vs. installing it via Windows Update will yield different descriptions in the update history.

When installing via WU, the update mechanism knows that the update was downloaded as a "server update". Since the actual update file is the same for both client and server Windows, however, you get a generic description when doing a manual install, since that download context is missing.

Apart from the history entry, the installation result is the same in both cases.

    1: Off-topic.
2: However, yes, you can install it. Disregard the post saying you can't. (note to all: please do not justify assertions about Microsoft products by pointing at their own propaganda as if it is fact; actually do some research instead)

Ever since halfway through the .NET Core 7 cycle, Microsoft quietly removed the statement on their website that the then-current 7.0.x release was supported on "Windows 7 SP1 with Extended Security Updates". I don't recall which release this coincided with. And yet all versions of 7.0.x (both before and after the statement's removal) will install and function without issue on Windows 7. The subsequent 8.0.x and 9.0.x releases can also be installed and used on Windows 7, and now 10.0.x appears to be following this pattern as well so far. This may have something to do with Server 2012 R2 still being a M$ support target for .NET Core, meaning that NT 6 is still represented (via 6.3).

It is critical to understand that Microsoft defines OS "support" as meaning Microsoft may (or may not) assist users who are trying to use the specific product in the advertised configuration. "Support" has nothing to do with compatibility, which is whether the product will install and function in any configuration (advertised or not). This has been Microsoft's doublespeak for the last 15 years now. Evidently, most people still have not learned this.

So, while you can certainly install 10.0.1 x86 on 7 x86, you'll have to find out if it functions as you expect. I have not tested that exact configuration myself, but I have tested 10.0.1 x86 on 7 x64 and it seems to work just fine.

I almost sure that everyone here knows about this.
But what is more important when i have a conversation with 0Patch representative i remember phrase that included something like "our updates is not compatible with ESU thing".
Can anyone provide competent commentaries to this case? Because it is not making any sane sense.

I shared some notes on 0 patch a few years ago that are relevant to your question:

I since stopped using 0patch (decided it wasn't worth it when ESU years 4-6 came through) and have not checked in on them in a couple years, so I'm not sure exactly where you're seeing them say "our updates is not compatible with ESU thing" or what they might mean by that, but it is probably related to the dozens of potential ESU baselines as noted above.

As i understood you correctly there is almost no benefit of using 0patch if you are on ESU LVL 3, but in the future things can change. I am just trying to comprehend if there will be any benefit of using 0patch on fully updated ESU LVL 3 puter.

Proof & proving are, as usual, in the hands of the individual user.

I came here knowing NOTHING about MDL, its usefulness or truthfulness or knowing crap about "abbodi1406". N O T H I N G...
Here you are, years later, on the very last month of usefulness, the door closing behind us for the last time, still wondering, still doubting.

YOU are on your own now if you continue as a Win7 core 6.1 user online. HEAR me! ON YOUR OWN!
USE 0Patch; don't use 0Patch. No-one is going to tell you from MDL what to do. Some moron on here gets upset because someone like myself provides information. Just information. That is ALL I had when I read about MDL. WORDS. Information. I actually heard about 0Patch before MDL. I kept looking & researching, on my own, for me!

Then it was time to make a decision & I chose MDL & abbodi1406. Years later, on the very last month, I am still grateful & do not regret MY decision.

I have already said, MANY times, I take Win7 offline in Jan2026 & revert to my secondary OS Zorin for online work. A modern updated supported LTS OS.
I DECIDED! FOR ME! What I am going to do.

Stop arguing. Offer your words & move on. I personally, like abbodi1406, am suspicious of 0Patch. I won't use them. BUT I present the information for ANYONE who may be interested. On the last days here. abbodi1406 is right. Maybe a new 0Patch thread should be created & someone far more skilled than us can find some answers. That is how ESU was presented to me at MDL all these years ago. A way around M$ fees for what I feel M$ already owed me as a user. Security updates for their product; core 6.1 Win7.

APPRECIATE abbodi1406. Be safe. Enjoy the holidays. Live long & prosper.
APPRECIATE many I have crossed paths with on MDL over the years & I wish the same future for.
APPRECIATE a few good folks we have lost along the way. RIP
For the rest of you whose only purpose is to argue & cause strife you can KISS MY A@@...

    Adios abbodi1406 & RIP core 6.1 Win7 M$...

abbodi1406 is surely treated us all on a universal scale of things, huge thanks goes out for all Windows 7/8 efforts

as for me, i'll keep my Windows 7 machine online beyond premium assurance eol, it is rock solid and i don't see any point in switching for something "better" or more "secure" at least for now

For better or worse, I just graded (up/down, whatever) to Win11. Couldn't find a linux distro that worked well for me. Win11 is not what it should have been, but with some effort it's actually not awful with a local account. With two days of work cleaning it up, fixing the start menu and whatnot, there are enough plusses to overlook most of the negatives. Sure it's not as good as 7 was, but with some of the latest patches it's starting to become tolerable. For what it's worth, I have to use it on my work laptop, so I had already gotten use to working around some of its many idiosyncrasies.

abbodi1406 and everyone who helped, thanks for your hard work. I see a lot of overuse of the word hero in the news these days, but keeping the dream alive for so many for so long was truly a heroic effort.
If nothing else, would love to buy you a beer/coffee (or two) someday to say thanks.

That is the only reason I would use Win11; IF someone was paying me to use it. So, I respect your choice & wish you Godspeed on your "update" adventures. Isn't "freedom of choice" a wonderful thing?

Happy & safe holidays all. ;>))
