Two month ago I had to stop Windows updates, because they were always messing up with my laptop to a point that I had to do a clean OS reinstallation twice (Windows 11). My laptop is MSI Cyborg 15 A12U (quite crap, but I didn't have money to afford another Acer Nitro 5 unfortunately... I can still play The Sims 3 though...). ChatGPT told me that sooner or later my graphic cards will start to be unstable without updates, but I don't want to reactivate them since they always ruin my laptop. Was it really a bad idea to stop these updates? Will my laptop soon be unusable?
Export the current drivers and clean install, dontt use anything that claims that your install will be the best ever and use the exported drivers to re-install hardware when needed.
Thanks for your suggestion. I've studied Cyber Security at Uni but I was more asleep than awake... I'm also worried about losing protection without them. I'll follow your advice.
I'd be disabling that iGPU if you can. If it was my laptop I would remove all GPU software for both than go into BIOS and see if you can disable the iGPU. Than install the most recent nvidia drivers 596.36? when you install them make sure to tick box the Perform clean installation.
Hi @erpsterm35 , you're right. I should have been more specific. It's the A12UCX. It's been a good laptop so far (well, I still miss my Acer Nitro 5 though!), but at the end of 2025 it started to get stuck at the "Please do not power off... installing updates" screen. So I had to do a clean OS installation and I deactivated the Win updates. In February 2026 I reactivated the Win updates, so my laptop started to install them and it got stuck to the same screen, so I had to do a clean OS installation again for the second time. Since then, I've downloaded a script made by someone which stops Win updates forever (and not just for up a month). So I haven't been updating my laptop since February... and now I'm starting to have some problems, like the grapihc cards issue I wrote on another post...
Hi guys, and sorry for being a pain, but my laptop is really starting to drive me crazy!!! Not only the Win updates and graphics problems... it also shuts down completely when I close the lid!!! It used to just show me the log-on page once opening the lid again, but now it powers off completely! I checked Event Viewer and I found: Windows failed to resume from hibernate with error status 0xC043000C The previous system shutdown at 11:11:50 PM on 5/8/2026 was unexpected. Should I just give up on it and buy a new laptop? Sorry again!
I would boot memtest86 from usb, run it overnight, or at least long enough to ensure you have no bad memory problems. If all is well, wipe the disk clean, and reinstall from a genuine iso. If you need drivers, get them from manufacturer support site. Do not strip or tweak anything in an attempt to create a perfect version of Windows 11.
@Rogy - I'm sure your problem can be solved, and hope you let us know when you get it figured out. There would be a list of some typical things to try before doing a complete reinstall - maybe you have already done most of these. From admin cmd prompt - DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth sfc /scannow Also - Run device manager = devmgmt.msc, alternately disable one or the other of your display drivers, see if it helps the graphics freezing Check you disk drives as suggested in prior posts Run memtest86 from a bootable usb to check for bad RAM
I mean this isn't terrible in terms of sector response time, but the speeds seem strange. I would imagine the ssd is fairly empty? In which case I'd start considering a test with another known good ssd and see how the machine performs.
Hi @shhnedo... thank you so much for trying to help me, but I'm getting really desperate. Explorer crashed as I tried to open This PC to check the disk space (227GB free of 454GB)... I had to wait for it to respond again!!! Another thing did was changing the graphics settings from "Let Windows decide" to Intel for problematic apps like Adobe PDF reader, Word and Paint: it solved the problem about them, but these freezing moments still happen! When I got this laptop, I tried to install my old Acer Nitro's SSD inside because it was 1TB (I know how to do basic things like SSD/RAM installations because a friend of mine showed me how), but this f***er MSI (sorry lol) refused to start and kept showing the BIOS instead. The Acer's SSD still works fine because I tried it on a Lenovo as well. It's just this laptop that refuses to recognise it! You know... I probably just buy a new laptop once I'm settled in Greece. Is there a point installing again Windows here? What if future updates will cause again the "Installing updates, please do not turn off the PC" loop? I will save more money and try to get another Acer Nitro or similar. I loved the Nitro 5, but one day it turned off and didn't turn on again. Completely dead, out of the blue! And the IT guys at Uni couldn't help either. They said my laptop was beautiful inside, but couldn't help me fix it! I'm really grateful for all your help and sorry if I sound frustated... because I am (at this laptop)! UPDATE Talking with Gemini about this made me remember of something I forgot to mention. When I put this original SSD back because the Acer one wasn't being recognised, I broke by mistake one of the laptop things that keep the SSD in place, so I'm using electrical tape to keep it still. Sometimes the SSD moves (BIOS screen), so I have to open the laptop and put it in place again. Gemini told me that this could also be the cause for my freezings and the installing updates loop. I just tried Victoria SMART and it said error and status unknown. My SSD on Task Manager always shows at 0%-1% max, especially when the laptop freezes. Is it a pleausible reason? I'm really losing my mind about ths
