Hi Ive set up a server and i have shared the 2 hdds, by right clicking on them and sharing. On my windows 7 laptop i can see the drives and the folders on them but when i try to open the folders i get a error, cant remember exactly, I'm at work, something about not having permission. Also the desktop connector software that i installed on the laptop fails to find the server, even though remote desktop connection works. Could somebody post a link to the correct version of the connector software for windows home server 2008, cus i think i need to get working first so i can sort out the above. I no its not a hardware issue cus i had it working perfectly with whs 2011 but I'm trying to go back to 08 till there is a activation solution for 2011. Thanks in advance. Matt
You could run Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials instead. It's the same thing as WHS 2011 really, just a few additional features such as an increased user limit and domain join capability.
If you are just starting this process !00's suggestion is the one I'd go with. It is far more lean than a full blown enterprise server with domain control. It works well as a media server and is better than WHS 2011.There is a lot been posted about it here on MDL. A bios mod will get you a permanent solution with a better product than WHS 2011 IMHO
Umm.. care to explain what that would do, and how it could possibly relate to a share permissions issue?
When i was running whs 11 i liked the software that ran on my laptop that told me the status of the server, what it had done, needed updates etc is there a same thing for windows server 2008? Matt
Only to check whether operating with full admin. rights. Like I advised change nothing. Where the server is domain controller also like for example with Windows SBS 2011 standard by default you are not in full admin.
