k, finally found the way to get it done. updated with check on boot, and keeping backup up to date. should work... lol
Hey Damian666, Just tried using you changer, one thing though is that if you don't have dotnet 2.0-3.5 installed it opens lots of windows (like for as many icons as you have) asking for the windows feature to be installed. So maybe have a check before it starts patching would be nice.
Why would you want to use the old Windows 7 icons, even though the new icons are pretty much the old icons just better? But yes, it's still works on 10125.
nah i don't like the new icons, its like they took the icons from win95 and flattened it and then colored it with pastels. tbh even the windows 7/8 icons aren't that great but i like them better than 10.
Doesn't seem to work in Windows 10 TH2 (Nov update) I ran the program as admin, clicked Patch and waited until it was done. Then I deleted IconCache.db and restarted, and nothing changed. Does anyone know any solution, or an alternative for TH2?
that's strange, I'm on the same windows version and it works for me did it at least create the patched file? if so, you could try to replace it manually for now
Thanks for the quick response! Yes, it created the file imageres.dll in the Icon Changer folder, as well as imageres-backup.dll. Checking imageres.dll with ResHack, it has the Win7 icons, though it still has the Win10 icons for some sizes. Is that normal? Anyway, I wasn't sure which imageres.dll I was supposed to replace, given that a file search yielded multiple results: C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll C:\Windows\SysWOW64\imageres.dll C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-imageres_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.10586.0_none_69433b8ba23d3968\imageres.dll C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-imageres_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.10586.0_none_0d24a007e9dfc832\imageres.dll So what I did was compare each of them with imageres-backup.dll using a byte-by-byte file comparison program. I found out that it's a backup of the one located in C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-imageres_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.10586.0_none_69433b8ba23d3968, so I replaced that one with the patched file, deleted the icon cache, and rebooted. Still no change. Should I replace the other imageres.dlls as well? Is that safe?
That did it, thanks! And thanks for making this utility as well, I missed the sexy Win 7 icons Thanks for the suggestion!
1. Thanks for this great app Damian666. Win10 is butt-ugly, Win7 is not, and Icon Changer is one of three tools I use to fix that. (the others are Classic Shell for the Start menu and WindowBlinds for the windows). 2. On Win10 systems, which come with .NET 4.x, Icon Changer gives a ".NET not found" message if .NET 2/3/3.5 is not installed. I've found the fastest easiest install is to use jabirbest's .Net Framework 3.5 offline Installer, available on sourceforge. 3. On one Win10 system, I've had a regression, where Icon Changer worked at first, but now does not. I don't know if it was a recent W10 upgrade or not. I tried to fix it by doing a Restore, then another Patch, but no go. Specs: Windows 10 Home, version 1709, build 16299.214. Anyone else seeing this ??
it uses a program that relies on net 3.5, so that should be normal I guess. ill check the regression, but its most certainly the upgrade.
Well, I tried moving the app to the desktop, so I could run it as admin, but WinRAR said that there were no files to even move. what?
