    Hi there everybody.

May I know your idea regarding this situation am experiencing right now.

In my personal computer there are two HDD partition in it C and D. In this two HD drives i can open my drive D using double click(mouse) on it, why is it every time i am opening drive C using double click the response is this "Choose the program you want to use to open this file:" of course a list of my installed program below was displayed. What i did is, am using Internet Explorer to open this drive C.

I found also this morning that eventhough my 120GB mobile hard disk with 3 partition has been infected(1 of 3). I suspected last saturday that, it is virus because that time when am unpacking universal keygen(downloaded from net) my McAfee responded "trojan remove" i suddenly deleted the file. At that time this problem arises. Am start pulling my hair now, bout this problem.
Any idea to fix this problem?

    Regards

    Virus Alerts

Before I say anything else, it is quite common for antivirus and especially antimalware progs to alert on a variety of patches, hacks, and such simple things as keygens; I would not necessarily conclude you are infected. For example, turn off WinXP Firewall and Spybot shreaks at you!

Your post is not clear to me, however: do you have ONE HDD with two primary partitions, or TWO HDDs, each with a primary partition?

Most confusing to me is that you seem to be saying that when you click on C:\ you simultaneously get the "choose file . . ." dialog AND the C:\ drive expands such that you can see the directory tree: is this right? Or are you saying that after C:\ expands, you click on a particular prog/file and THEN you get the choose-file dialog?

Regardless, if the problem is as you describe, I doubt very much a virus, worm, or Trojan. I mean, who wants to hack a prog such that the singular effect is to monkey with an IE open-file dialog?

Finally, you seem to be describing two separate events on two different machines: yes? I am old, feeble, and slow: perhaps you might consider a by-the-numbers approach, i.e., on my personal computer, I did this, that, and the other and now this happens; on my laptop - ditto. Perhaps others reading your post are able to make assumptions that elude me because I have insufficient empirical data.

Did you take that screenshot after double clicking the drive letter? It says "File: Sunset.jpg" so that might be a clue. By the way what happens if you right click on the drive letter and click "Open"?

Nope i do this screenshot here in office never mind that sunset.jpg. Am not bringing my laptop if i go to work.

Remove that "File: Sunset.jpg" under, thats the results after i double click or eventhough i right click and hit open.

    Where and When

Thanks for the clarification; a bit more info please.

Off the top of my head, I am wondering about file associations but I do not believe simply expanding a root would call into play file associations. Nevertheless . . .

Regardless of what drive/partition, does this only happen when you try to open the root with IE or does it happen when you click on any file in the directory tree? For example, suppose you try to open an *.htm or *.html file. If not present, copy any *.htm or *.html file to the desktop. Navigate to that file from IE (FILE - OPEN- etc) and see if it opens normally. If it does, then one can assume that, at least, *.htm or *.html files are associated properly.

Do you by any chance have FireFox (we of the guru class think it's one of the best browsers) installed? If so, does the same thing happen in FF? If the root expands normally with FF, I would assume IE corruption first, then possibly system corruption - which could mean anything.

If the same thing happens with FF, I would focus on system corruption.

Finally, would I be correct in assuming that, be it through My Computer or Explorer, you can expand the root normally? In other words, does this issue ONLY occur in IE and only manifest itself when you try to expand the root?

My apologies for the many questions but it is always easier - and quicker - for me to solve issues when I am flooded with data.

And if you find a solution, please let us know for the sake of our education. Lots of times, after a few folks offer solutions, one never hears from the original poster as to whether or not the issue was solved. Thanks

Sorry you had to reformat, acres, but at least you're working again.

By the way I remember seeing a computer where someone copied a printer driver cd to the root of their c: drive. If you double-clicked c: in My Computer then instead of changing to the drive it would autoplay and launch the setup for the printer. :)

When all else fails - format

    Hey aCres,

    A fix is a fix!

Like Zort noted in the one example, there are so many possibilities that could create the anomaly you experienced. And, if you've been around operating systems long enough, you KNOW they are going to get funky sooner than later, especially with XP. (I dual boot 2000/XP because 2000 is extremely stable and I can mess with XP from within 2000).

By way of anticipation, I address potential problems by creating a small, primary OS partition on two of my HDDs. Nothing but the OSs and progs go on those partitions (2000 on one/XP on the other). Thereafter, I create image backups (Acronis) weekly. If I am going to do any "patch" work, I create an image file immediately before applying the patch. If I end up creating a monster: no problem - quickly restore the OS/progs with the image file. This method saves me hours of formatting, reinstalling progs, updating the OSs, progs, drivers, etc., and then configuring it all again. The partitions are small (40 GB) so it does not take long to backup or restore.

Glad you are back in business.
