I kinda like the new win10 start menu actually. But can it do without telemetry, spying, and all that? What can I install at the very minimal to preserve that search bar?

    So far these appear necessary:

    Code:
    Microsoft-Windows-Cortana-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~10.0.10240.16384
    Microsoft-Windows-Cortana-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.10240.16384
    Microsoft-Windows-Cortana-PAL-Desktop-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.10240.16384
Search2-{base,shell,package} i wonder what's what or if all 3 are needed together

If you like the ugly thing you need to keep the cortana and search2 packages.

Best is to remove Cortana and other crap from an offline image means iso, best to do that using msmg tool, the reason is because if you do that way there will be no entries in start menu and Windows will be cleaner, then after installation you can remove some more packages you don't want,

DAMN! I removed HYPER-V months ago and now I need it o_O
Tried to add it from "Install Windows Component" but Windows hangs on startup, I need to restore backup image.
Is there a way to add it again using install_wim_tweak or in any other way?

    How about...

Using your original image, extract the packages to .cab files then see if DISM can add these packages to your online system.

Not sure if it would work but worth a try, maybe ?

    I think it works surely.

But given the number of packages involved is likely easier do to an inplace upgrade and then remove back the unwanted packages or an in place upgrade from an already cleaned WIM (cleaned by all the unwanted packages but Hyper-V)

Simplifying a lot, something like WMware or Virtualbox, way less practical of both of them especially for home usage.

Quite frankly, it's a POS...just tried it the other day - it shouted all sorts of networking obsenities at me - stick with proper VM's, I'd say.

I have a few threads I have subscribed to which helped me out. I will link them very soon.
On the iPad at the mo and it is just hard work doing that on here. Will boot the PC in a tic and link some threads.

    It is quite easy really.

Indeed no one suggested you to reinstal from scratch. Just do an in place upgrade.

It's the official MS definition for (re)installing Windows on top of itself (keeping everything).

Something that on w3.11 days people was used to do twice a day to fix the endless problems of the OS :D
