Hard to believe, but the fastest average lap speed ever recorded in Formula One occurred 14 years ago. During pre-qualifying for the 2004 race at Monza, Italy, Juan Pablo Montoya of the Williams-BMW team averaged 162.95 mph (>262kph) for a flying lap. This was back when the cars were still using 3.0 liter V-10 engines with 860-900 horsepower and several years before hybrid technology (KERS) was introduced to F-1. Notice the nod of approval from team owner Frank Williams at the end of the lap.
