FYI, the instructions included in this work fine for clean installs but if you want to run an upgrade on an x64 system it will not work. I am currently testing an ISO I made using instructions mixed from this guide and one for Windows 7 including upgrades. I will try to post a modified guide that the author can adopt if he chooses.

Cannot upgrade from Win 7 Ultimate to Win 8 Pro with Media Center, fresh install only. Up to Win 8 Pro is OK. any suggestion?

Take ownership of the license file first then delete :)

Pro WMC isn't a directly upgradeble edition. Upgrade to Pro then upgrade to ProWMC or do a fresh install.

What happens to media center settings in this scenario? Will they be retained or will the channel lineup and recorded programs all have to be setup again? Also, has anyone tried a cablecard with Win8 Media Center yet?

I had a mount directory most of which I couldn't empty from a prior failed attempt but renamed it as well as renaming the prior win8aio directory above it (just a play-around drive used for this purpose). Could this have caused the error even though the path is totally different?

No. At least not yet, never officially, and maybe with some major reg tweaks \ hacked dlls.

That is what a stale mount point is. You cannot simply rename the folder, you need to also clean it up using the dism cleanup command.

Thanks! Will retry. The "bad" mount directory was from a different attempt and the new attempt where I had the problem was with a new win8aio with the sub-directories, etc. Are you saying the commands can still pick up the stale mount point even though where it is is not in the pathway the current commands are addressing? The old directory was renamed c:\w and the mount c:\w\mounted--I of course did that with the idea they would just be dead weight and not affect the new attempt to make the disc with the default (i.e., c:\win8aio\mount, etc.) directories. Again, I would have just erased the old stuff but couldn't.
