My Opinion is, as long as you update virus definition, it should be okay.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows Vista and 7, as it was built-in on Windows 8 & 10 (Windows Defender).
For XP, I would like to use Avira. Comodo is really great, but not easy to setting.

And what about legit and well-known clean sites but suddenly compromised now injecting through your browser the most nasty malware? :D
Or what about browsing a clean trustworthy site and accidentally click a link to a compromised site or nasty on purpose site?
I'm with you, A/V is snake oil but Sandboxie. Sandboxie really works and protects.

I just use Chrome (sand boxed) no AV, not infected. I use Malwarebytes and scan memory once a week no real time scanner. Use online scan once a month. You can keep Stinger as a backup.

Firefox, Opera, Cyberfox, etc. have no built-in sandbox. Not everyone uses Chrome which btw its sandbox is targeted and already bypassed by attackers. On the other hand, Sandboxie protect Internet facing apps other than browsers. In short Sandboxie is a must have, imho. :)

Are you a spokesman for sandboxie, it's ok except it causes slowdown on some software ?There are other ways you can go about it like browsing in a vm with a non persistent disk.

LOL no I'm not but I like a lot the program. Of course there are other ways:
    • Anti-exe
    • Policy restriction
    • HIPS
    • etc.

I know the title of this thread is "Best Free Antivirus Software" , but the paid versions aren't any better than most of the free apps.
As a side business where I work- we do computer repairs- it's really mostly virus removal nowadays- and I've literally seen every AV program under the sun (paid and free) let stuff in.

Best bet is practice safe surfing, and if you need to vist a less than reputable site- use someone else's computer :p

1st. its not a security forums so the members telling you their experiences using different free/paid AV in their system. It depends on the usability of internet , there are instances, people running no av paid or free but their system is clean but where as, there are some, who, change their av just like they change the undergarments still their system gets infected very often.

So you try yourself the free AVs linked above and decide yourself or try any paid AVs for 30days which suits your needs, then buy it.

Yes free version AV has some annoying adds if you don't like then go for the paid version.
