I pay a few dollars a year for Eset, which I am quite happy with. I have tried a number of the "free" or "freely available" antivirus programs, including Avast, Symantec, and others. I even paid for an on sale (very cheap) copy of Bitdefender last year. I always come back to Eset, but if had to go with something at no cost, I would definitely choose Symantec over Avast.

Ive always found Avast to be great for me, and on a number of systems Ive used and built.

Doesn't change anything, data mining does not require any account.

Avast is horrid, packed full of advertising and a resource hog it borders on malware itself. I just use Defender + 0patch (the free version) and uBlock Origin in every browser.

hm. i have my grave doubts about any antivirus for windose...
i have a long career of using most of the free ones since the days of the 80286..
all were ineffective. many were a pita.
the fact is, that windose offers a multitude of vulnerabilities for wicked people.
it is so bad that this `operating system` is keeping a whole moneymaking av-industry
afloat.[ if windose did not exist, the av-industry would demand it was invented.]

and the solution? stay far away from windose!
after i switched to linux i have had zero problems for almost 3 years now.

Running all windows versions and never got infected by anything.

I really wonder why everything needs to end in windows bashing by the evangelistic linux users (who don't do more then a little (pron)browsing, mailing and printing a letter), for every os now there are virusses (and more when it is getting popular), botnets and malware around.

This is for everyone who reads this:
I cannot stand either OS being bashed. Different people have different needs, just accept that. If you favor Linux, just stay out of the Windows topics, simple as that.
You don't need to hard-advertise for Linux anywhere. If it is really as awesome as you claim, it will advertise itself.

Again, if someone asks for help with a Windows problem, "Linux" is not the correct answer. Same for the other way around.

Indeed, just sticking with Windows Defender on Win10 and Win11 works well for ordinary users. Probably as good as anything else you can get for free. Defender haters seem misguided to me.

I have a dual boot with Budgie and on Winblows the only stuff I buy is security SW:

Kaspersky Premium Total Security (£50+ for 10 devices [working on all platforms] for 2 years is very reasonable, given the whole package for the whole family, Password app, Kids Security/Control, unlimited VPN [at least for a few devices?] etc.)

SurfShark VPN (around £2 per month, again, affordable, unlimited number of devices, plus it also works on Budgie...)

Those 2 are supplemented in Firefox, Vivaldi, Brave and Tor (all working with Kaspersky's apps) with various adds blocking, tracking controlling scripts, anti-popup plugins etc.

Then, it's OK, otherwise it can be a nightmare, depending on one's hobbies... ;) (Even more so under Android!)

    No, the lightest is Kaspersky.

Like I said Windows comes with Defender, it's free, just run 0patch (also free) and you're done.
